LMS Evaluation

About the Project

Introduction

The California State University (CSU) Directors of Academic Technology (DAT) recently engaged the CSU in a Learning Management System (LMS) Strategic Planning process to:

  1. Create a common vision for LMS usage in the various CSU academic technology environments.
  2. Establish a “best practice” collaborative approach for contracting and procuring LMS systems for the campuses.

This process included creation of an RFP by DAT with input from CSU stakeholders, including representatives from such CSU organizations as ITAC, CATS, COLD, and ATAC.  One of the end results of this process is a short-list of vendors with which each campus can enter directly into contract negotiations, without the need to generate either an RFI or an RFP.

Reasons CSUCI needs to evaluate LMS

  • Increasing licensing costs
  • Legacy, out-dated software
  • Comply with the CO directive [http://www.calstate.edu/accessibility/] regarding 508 compliance for all Web applications and instructional materials.

CSUCI needs to evaluate LMS options to provide innovative and improved instructional technology in an easy-to-use environment for faculty and students, while simultaneously addressing the need for ATI compliance and the problem of escalating licensing costs.

Goal

The goal is to provide the Provost a recommendation for a new university-wide LMS by early Summer 2009.
