Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a vital figure of the modern era. His lectures and dialogues stirred the concern and sparked the conscience of a generation. The movements and marches he led brought significant changes in the fabric of American life through his courage and selfless devotion. This devotion gave direction to thirteen years of civil rights activities. His charismatic leadership inspired men and women, young and old, in this nation and around the world. Honor Dr. King with this unique presentation of his most famous speeches.

African American History Bee

The African American History Bee is designed to promote awareness of the magnificent contributions that African Americans have given to society and to the world. Learning about African American history provides us with a sense of knowledge, culture, pride, and inspiration that allows us to truly reach our potential. The Bee is devised to test students’ knowledge of Black History facts in the form of a trivia competition.

Miss Representation

Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Clothesline Project

Sexual Assault Awareness Week-The Clothesline Project was started by women in Massachusetts as a way to “air the dirty laundry” of sexual assault and give survivors a productive, artistic outlet for their anger and emotions. A traditional event serves as a visual reminder of the pain caused by all sexual assaults and the strength of all of those who survive it. Previous year's t-shirts and new t-shirts designed by our students hang on clotheslines assembled at the Courtyard of the Student Union.

Sexual Assault Awareness Week-From the late 1970's through present day,Take Back The Night events have been held by college and university women's centers. At CSU Channel Islands, Take Back the Night raises awareness about the issue of sexual violence, empower survivors and lets it be known that violence of any kind will not be tolerated in our community.

This workshop offers participants a chance to become familiar with some of the pressing issues for lesbian, gay, bisexuual, and transgendered people of campus. Participants will practice dealing with specific situations like hate speech and workshop ideas for making this a more welcoming campus for all.

Day of Silence

The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Each year the event has grown, now with hundreds of thousands of students coming together across the county to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Each year, CSU Channel Islands provides participants with a visual symbol (button, arm band or t-shirt) to wear during the day and attend the "Break the Silence" event.
