Marketing and Fundraising for Nonprofit Organizations

In today’s competitive fundraising environment, professionals in nonprofit organizations must be equipped with successful marketing and development skills. In this course comprised of six modules, you will learn state-of- the-art techniques in marketing, communication and fundraising from instructors who are accomplished practitioners in these fields of study.

This program emphasizes marketing and communication skills and how they enhance the fundraising process. Individuals who complete all six modules and the final assignment will be awarded a certificate of completion acknowledging them as a specialist in marketing and fundraising for nonprofit organizations. Priority for available seating for each class will be given to participants enrolled in all six modules. 3.0 Continuing Education Units for (CEUs) will be awarded upon request as a permanent record of one’s attendance. The program provides special emphasis on utilizing Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) survey materials and can be helpful to participants preparing for the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification exam.

Module I  Marketing and Communication Date: March 8, 2008 Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Marketing principles and how they enhance fundraising and development • How to develop a written marketing plan • Cause-related marketing techniques • The importance of personalized/customized marketing methods

Module II  Annual Giving, Membership Clubs and Corporate Giving Date: March 22, 2008 Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • The six-step process in successful membership development • Successful closing strategies • Constructing effective solicitation letters • Maximizing board member productivity and minimizing their time

Module III  Special Event Marketing Date: April 5, 2008 Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Creating an effective event timeline and working with volunteers effectively • Attracting corporate sponsors to your event • Attracting celebrities to your event

Module IV  Capital Campaigns and Major Gifts Date: April 19, 2008 Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Major donor cultivation techniques • How to overcome objections • Capital campaign principles and techniques • The six essential steps of a capital campaign • How to conduct a feasibility study

Module V  Corporate and Foundation Grant Solicitation Date: May 3, 2008 Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Writing successful grant proposals • How to research and find grant sources • Writing effective case statements

Module VI  Planned Giving Fundamentals Date: May 17, 2008 Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. • Benefits of planned giving and donor tax benefits and implications • Remainder Trusts, Charitable Gift Annuities, and Charitable Lead Trusts • Pooled income funds and bequests • Basics of administering a planned giving program  

   Instructors

Edward N. Lewis, MPA, CFRE Lead Instructor and Program Founder Lewis is vice president of Development for the Alliance for the Arts, the nonprofit fundraising arm of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. He is a well-known expert in marketing, fundraising and communications. Ed is recognized as the individual who created the Hollywood Walk of Fame cause-related marketing program.

Stephen D. Christensen, MPA, CFRE Executive Vice President for University Advancement Concordia University, Irvine. Christensen has more than 20 years of diversified fund-raising experience designing and implementing comprehensive fund development programs.  

Stephanie Buckley, J.D., LL.M. Director of the Center for Estate and Gift Planning Pepperdine University. Buckley works with current and prospective donors raising major gifts, planned gifts, and in-kind gifts. She identifies and creates estate and financial planning tools, is in charge of the Pepperdine Estate Planning Network (PEPNET), and organizes various planned giving presentations.

Elizabeth A. Bawden, J.D. Partner Law Offices of Charles A. Larson Bawden previously worked as an attorney at Crescendo Interactive, Inc. and the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP. Ms. Bawden received her J.D. from the UCLA School of Law with a specialization in taxation and her law practice focuses in estate planning, planned giving and tax exempt organizations.

   FEES

$195 per module $1,053 for series Students who enroll for the entire program (6 modules) and pay in full receive a 10% discount off the full price. Priority registration is given to those who enroll for all six modules. Those who do not enroll for the entire program will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified two weeks prior to the start of the program if space is available.

How do I receive the certificate of completion?

• Complete all six modules (six class meetings for a total of 30 hrs).

• Devise a comprehensive marketing plan as the final assignment.
