Committee Tasks

  1. Advise the University in achieving its mission to reflect the diverse characteristic of the region with regards to employees and students with disabilities and to foster in all its members a commitment to the participation of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of university life so as to further a sense of inclusiveness, respect for human difference, and concern for others.
  2. Advise the President and the Vice Presidents, Deans, and University Planning Committee on federal law and state mandates; as well as the development of priorities, timelines, cost estimation, and resources allocation required to make “reasonable accommodation” for persons with disabilities.
  3. The committee shall develop policy recommendations designed to improve the accessibility of University programs and services to persons with disabilities. These recommendations shall be forwarded to the President, President’s Council, to the Academic Senate and to appropriate university units for consideration.
  4. The committee shall assist the University in the evaluation, review, and/or establishment of campus-wide policies or procedures which do not comply with CSU, state, or federal regulations relating to persons with disabilities and recommend to the President modifications for:
    1. state or non-state funded new architectural projects.
    2. facility modifications to ensure the safety and equal access for persons with disabilities in university programs and activities.
    3. equal access to electronic communications and computer technology to ensure that all materials and services made available through the use of technology are fully accessible to students, employees, and visitors with disabilities.
    4. barrier removal priorities as specified in State University Administrator's Manual (SUAM).
    5. timelines as defined in the transition plan as required by: ADA. A Transition Plan reflects the steps necessary for structural changes to campus facilities that are necessary to be undertaken to achieve program accessibility.  The plan shall, at a minimum:
      1. Identify physical obstacles in the facilities that limit the accessibility of its programs or activities to individuals with disabilities
      2. Describe in detail the methods that will be used to make the facilities accessible
      3. Specify the schedule for taking the steps during each year of the transition period
      4. Indicate the official responsible for implementation of the plan.
  5. The committee shall recommend to the President appropriate policies and programs that mitigate the effects of any past, existing, and potential discrimination.
  6. The committee shall initiate and promote informational materials and activities as part of its implementation of the aforementioned responsibilities.
  7. The committee shall file an annual report with the Academic Senate and the President.
