Foreign Travel Liability Insurance Program
The University requires Foreign Travel Liability Insurance coverage for employees participating in University sponsored and approved international travel. This insurance is also strongly recommended for students participating in short term international travel. The Foreign Travel Liability Insurance Program (FTLIP) administered by the CI Environment, Safety and Risk Management office provides the following coverage, subject to limitations, during travel in a foreign country.
-
General Liability
-
Excess Auto Liability
-
Accidental death and dismemberment
-
Medical Expense, including emergencies
-
Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation
-
Political Evacuation and War Risk Benefits
-
Trip cancellation for illness
-
Assistance Services – 24 hour emergency medical, travel, and personal security.
-
Medical Emergency Services – obtaining services, communication, coordinate payments
-
Legal Assistance – Coordinate local attorney, consulate, embassy and family assistance
FTLIP is a package program, including all the coverage and services listed above for a single premium. The premiums for fiscal year 2010-11 are as follows:
-
Faculty/Staff Trips up to 15 days $50 per trip per traveler
-
Faculty/Staff Trips up to 30 days $65 per trip per traveler
-
Students Trips up to 15 days $40 per trip per traveler
-
Students Trips up to 30 days $50 per trip per traveler
Note: This premium may be higher for high risk destinations; higher risk travel will also necessitate providing additional information before coverage can be approved. FTLIP does not apply inside the United States, its possessions or territories. FTLIP will not cover high risk activities such as hang gliding, scuba diving or white water rafting.
Note: Participants who are not students, faculty or staff members are eligible for FTLIP coverage. It is strongly recommended that participants who are not CI student, faculty or staff members obtain individual health insurance coverage for the foreign destination and also obtain emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation coverage for the duration of their foreign travel.
Obtaining FTLIP Coverage
FTLIP coverage is obtained through the campus Environment, Safety and Risk Management office. Requests for coverage should be made as soon as practical but never less than ten business days prior to travel.
The request is initiated by providing the following information:
-
Purpose of travel
-
Name of each employee/student traveler
-
Dates of departure and return
-
Name of faculty member traveling with student
-
Number of non-student, non-employees traveling with the student/employee
-
Any special needs
Upon receipt of the trip information the office of Environment Safety and Risk Management will submit a request for coverage, and when coverage is confirmed, provide a Travel Assist Card to the responsible faculty or staff member for distribution to the participants prior to departure. The Travel Assist Card provides evidence of coverage and contact information for FTLIP services.
