Brief Activity DescriptionThis World Music Concert Series will bring several diverse international music artists to campus. These performances will demonstrate the international music styles that I teach the students in my PAMU 332 World Music class. I plan on bringing in a duo of musicians who playing Northern Indian sitar/tabla music, a contemporary African world beat quartet, a flamenco guitarist and female dancer combination, and an interactive percussion artists who will give the students hands-on experience with Latin and African percussion instruments.

These live music demonstrations are absolutely essential to the students' understanding of the concepts being presented in class. We have hundreds of student testimonials on file where students have stated that these live music presentations have made the course concepts come alive for them in a most positive manner.
Learning Outcomes and Relation to IRA to Course OfferingsFor this course, PAMU 332 World Music, the learning outcomes are:

• Describe orally and in writing the diverse styles and cultures of world music
• Discuss in writing musical characteristics and genres of indigenous music
• Differentiate between diverse musical styles of several countries and regions
• Describe world music’s significant impact on popular music
• Identify songs or styles of world music not previously encountered
• Write about a world music concert they attend

These live concerts will address each and every one of those outcomes. My students are required to write a review about each concert.

At our Indian music concerts, we always gets lots of students from the Beatles class. This is of course related to George Harrison bringing Indian music sounds into the Beatles studio recording projects. Students enrolled in PAMU 330 - "Jazz in America" also will benefit from several of these music styles which include large doses of improvisation.

Our wonderful guest flamenco dancer will appeal to all the PA Dance class participants.

These concerts will also be of direct interest to the following courses: Music Theory, Music Fundamentals, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Private Lessons (all instruments), and more. The connections between experiencing live music and the learning of various music topics are well established by now. Dr. Murphy and myself have hundreds of student testimonials which validate how our students have greatly benefited from this concerts.
Description of Assessment ProcessAll students attending the event will be asked to write an assessment to the concert, using the Qualtrics IRA Student Evaluation form. They will write their thoughts about the importance of the event, and how they have benefitted from it. The students in my courses will be required to write a multiple page, in-depth review/summary of what they learned about the musical styles that were demonstrated at the events. The writing assignment for my class will serve to address our University’s goal of writing across the curriculum.

This event will also be posted on the Performing Arts Events calendar, and in the Events section of the myCI website.

Announcements about the events will also be made in all PA classes, by myself and my colleagues.
Bring Benefit to CampusI will bring back this high level of musical culture to campus as often as the IRA funds will allow me to.
SustainabilityAdvertising for these events will mostly be carried out in the area of electronic media, to cut down on the consumption of natural resources.
