Notification of Changes to Student Web Space

UPDATE: 2009-11-02: FTP and Web access to the old studentweb.csuci.edu web domain has now been disabled. Please read the notification below for additional information.

Overview

Starting on August 17, 2009, all current students will have a new student web space with more storage space and more access options.

This web page will help answer questions about this change.

Why is student web space being changed?

Information Technology at CSUCI is changing the student web space to improve logon and application security in support the CSUCI ID Management (IDM) project.

What will change?

  1. Domain name & URL for your student’s web space. See details below for more information.
  2. Storage limit will increase. Total available storage space will be calculated based on total available storage within Dolphin Files, which is 300 MB per student.
    1. For example, Tracey Smithson has stored 200MB of documents and other data in Dolphin Files. Because the total Dolphin Files storage limit is 300MB, Tracey can use 100MB (300MB – 200MB) for student web site storage.
  3. More access methods from both on- and off-campus. You will be able to access your new web space in one of 3 ways:
    1. Via Dolphin Files. Dolphin Files is a new service that will be available through myCI to enable web-based access to documents in your student web space from both on- and off-campus.
    2. Via SFTP. You can use any SFTP client, including Adobe Dreamweaver, to access your student web space from both on- and off-campus.
    3. Via the Z drive (available on campus only). The Z network drive will be available when you logon in a classroom or campus lab.
  4. Application engine availability. In your new student web space, application engine support (i.e., ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, etc) will be disabled. However, you may be able to obtain application access.

Is this change related to myCI?

REMINDER: your URL will not be available until Monday, August 17, 2009, after 5pm.

What user name and password will I use to access my new student’s web space?

What will happen to my existing web site on studentweb.csuci.edu?

On August 28, 2009, access via FTP to student web sites on the old studentweb.csuci.edu domain will be set to “read only”. Current students with web sites on the old studentweb.csuci.edu domain will be able to logon to view and download their data files, but they will no longer be able to add or modify files located on the server.

Can I continue to use/update my web site at the old studentweb.csuci.edu address?

You should discontinue use of your old web space at studentweb.csuci.edu after August 17, 2009, but no later than Friday, October 30, 2009 at 5pm. After 5pm, Friday, October 30, 2009, access to these web sites will be permanently disabled, and you will no longer be able to view or retrieve web sites through the studentweb.csuci.edu domain.

Will my existing web space on studentweb.csuci.edu be moved to the new domain?

No. Content from existing student web space will not be moved to the new server. Students are responsible for downloading and transferring any documents or other data to their new student web space themselves.

I'm an instructor, and I need my students to create & publish web applications using ASP/PHP/etc. What are my options?

If your students are creating a web application as part of their coursework, you should contact the IT Help Desk to request an “enhanced” web space. You will need to provide the Help Desk with the list of Dolphin User Names of students that require “enhanced” web space access.

IT staff will evaluate your request, and communicate with you regarding the request’s approval. Once approved, IT staff will create the enhanced web space to your required specifications and notify you of completion.

Requests for enhanced web space must be submitted by the course instructor; requests from individual students will not be processed.

Students who are creating web application for personal reasons outside of specific coursework should purchase an internet domain and web site hosting account with a commercial web hosting service provider.
