Campus Adopts an Optional Microsoft Office 2007/08 Implementation Plan
The IT Department has received many requests from students, faculty and employees to upgrade our Office Suite of applications from 2003 to 2007 (from 2004 to 2008 for the Macs). Because of some incompatibility issues with a few of the applications used on campus (Peoplesoft Finance, and Hyperion), we cannot do a complete rollout to all computers on campus. Those employees who use these applications should speak with their supervisor prior to requesting to be a part of this optional program.
Opt In Approach
The IT Department will be implementing
an Opt-In approach. Part of the plan is to install the MS Office Compatibility pack on all windows-based computers.
This utility will allow someone with Office 2003 to open a document created in Office 2007.
- July 2
- Add the MS Office Compatibility pack to all windows based computers on campus (for faculty who are not on campus this summer, request can be made for this when they return)
- July 3
- Manually add the MS Office Compatibility pack to mac based computers on campus (for faculty who are not on campus this summer, request can be made for this when they return)
- July 7-11
- We will be installing Office 2007 (2008 for the Macs) on all public library computers, and selected computer labs: (based on dept. chair decision)
- July 14
- Group policy change to make the SAVE feature of Office products default to 2003 version (windows only)
- July 15 and beyond
- Opt-in installs scheduled through Help Desk
Cutover On All New Machines
- 2007/08 versions will be the default for all new machines coming on campus beginning in Spring semester, 2009. At this time, an employee getting a new computer can, for workflow purposes, request Office 2003.
Training workshops that will cover the basic changes in the office suite will be provided during July, August and September. You may want to consider attending a workshop prior to requesting an upgrade. Registration is mandatory.

FAQ
- What are we getting?
- Access
- Excel
- Outlook
- Powerpoint
- Publisher
- Word
- One Note
- What about computers that do not meet the minimum recommended requirements for Office 2007?
- They will need to remain on 2003 version. Minimum requirements are:
- Windows XP
- 1 GB RAM or more
- 1 GHz CPU or faster
- 4 GB of free hard drive space or greater
- Departmental Access Databases
- We do not know what is out there, and what people/departments may be using Access for in-house database applications. IT cannot guarantee what could happen to these applications during the upgrade.
- Other non compliant applications
- End Note on the Mac – The Mac version of Endnote that is in the library is version X. This should not be an issue on windows based computers.
Please keep in mind that this is an optional program. You and your supervisor have the choice as to upgrade or not.
