Guidelines for Use of Twitter at CSUCI
Notice Regarding Use of Twitter at CSUCI
All existing laws (federal, state and local), California State University and CSU Channel Islands regulations and policies apply to users of communication and information technology resources (including Twitter), including not only laws and regulations that are specific to computers, networks, and communication technology, but also those that may apply generally to personal conduct.
CSUCI employees are encouraged to engage in the full range of communication that is at the heart of academic freedom, while being mindful of their ethical and professional obligation to engage in conversations responsibly.
CSUCI faculty and staff who use Twitter in support of their studies, instruction, duties as employees, official business with the University, and/or other University-sanctioned activities are expected to uphold the highest academic standards in accordance with University policies and practices. Incidental personal use is permitted as stipulated by law.
Twitter is a messaging service provided by a 3rd party. The statements, views and opinions presented by CSUCI employees using that service are those of the employees and are not endorsed by, nor do they necessarily reflect, the opinions of CSUCI. Such use does not constitute an official endorsement or approval by CSUCI of any product or service.
What Is Twitter?
Twitter is a social messaging system which allows people to stay connected by sending and reading short text messages, known as “tweets”. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, via SMS (cell phone text messaging) or external applications. The service is free over the Internet.
To sign up for a free Twitter account, employees may visit http://twitter.com.
Guidelines for Appropriate Use of Twitter at CSUCI
- Above all, represent CSUCI well. Use your authority, confidence and knowledge of CSUCI to represent the University in an appropriate manner.
- Be professional and discreet. Follow applicable laws and policies; it is your responsibility to know what they are and how they apply to you.
- Remember that you can’t control your message once you hit “update.” Consider legal and ethical implications before you send a tweet. Think twice (or more) before you send.
- Be authentic. As David Armano writes, “Prove that you are listening and do something that no-one else is doing.” Authenticity will help you earn the respect of other Twitter users and your community.
- Respect others. Be kind.
- Commit to checking Twitter several times per day.
- Commit to learning how to use Twitter effectively.
- Use a URL shortening service to shorten links to web sites in your tweets; keep URLs around 20 characters in length.
Ideas for Using Twitter
Use Twitter as a way to provide unique resources. You can build community, interest and credibility by posting early information, discounts, special event, and other relevant information on Twitter.
Use Twitter to provide customer service. Answer questions, and point people to meaningful resources. Listen and respond to @ replies on your account.
Use http://search.twitter.com to find out what people are saying about CSUCI or a specific topic. Join in the conversation if you have something meaningful to offer that will benefit CSUCI.
