Updated April 7, 2005 - Wireless access is available in a limited capacity on the CSUCI campus. As of the beginning of the Spring 2005 term, a limited rollout of the wireless network was completed, which included the library and the Art complex.
The initial test rollout has gone really well and other areas will be rolled out starting the week of April 11, starting with the Islands Cafe, Ojai Hall and areas of the Bell Tower (See Maps below) and continuing to other communal areas where students are likely to congregate.
The goal of this phased wireless rollout is to make sure the network is as secure as possible, while keeping it easy to ease and configure for the users. Wireless users with active network credentials (Active Directory login name and password) will only have to enter a WEP security key on their laptops one time to enable access to the network.
Depending on your role at CSUCI, you will have access to the services described in the Table 1, Available Wireless Services, as listed below.
| Service Type | Available To: |
|---|---|
| Web Browsing | All wireless users |
| Blackboard | All wireless users |
| FTP Access | All wireless users |
| Network drive access | Faculty and staff only |
| Outlook email access | Faculty and staff only |
The following tables describe available indoor and outdoor wireless access areas.
Maps of indoor and outdoor wireless access areas are available in GIF and Adobe Acrobat PDF format.
Before you can access wireless at CSUCI, there are two steps you must complete:
Each wireless card manufacturer will have a different configuration setup, so a generic "how-to" guide is not possible at this time. However, every wireless card setup should have a provision to enter what is known as a "WEP key".
The "WEP key" is an alphanumeric code that acts as a password to allow access to a wireless system. It's essential to locate the WEP setting in the wireless setup and enter the following information:
Each instance of wireless will have what's called an SSID. This is the active wireless service being offered by a wireless access point. The active SSID for the CSUCI campus rollout is "cci_wireless." This SSID is being actively advertised, so a wireless card should be able to see it while in the area of an active access point.
You do not need to be able to physically see an access point to use one. Some of the access points are located in telecom closets and their presence isn?t obvious. Anyone with wireless should be able to see cci_wireless in the Library and the Art Center if their wireless card is active.
Once your computer and wireless card are configured correctly, including the configuration of the WEP key, follow the following instructions to access wireless Internet on campus:
1. First, open Internet Explorer as your web browser. Please note that only Internet Explorer has been tested and confirmed to work at this time.
2. Once Internet Explorer is open, you will automatically be redirected to the CSUCI Wireless Network logon page (as shown in Figure 1, below).
3. Next, in the boxes provided, enter your network logon credentials, as pictured in Figure 2 below.

Faculty/staff: use the same user name and password that you use to logon to your desktop computer or for web-based email access.
Students: use the same user name and password that you use to logon to the campus computer labs.
Once you have entered your information, select the "LOGON" button to connect to the wireless network.
Once your account has authenticated, two browser windows will appear.
The length of your wireless session per logon depends on your role:
To logoff of your wireless connection, select the "Logout" button at the bottom of the CSUCI Wireless Logon Information and Status Page.
For security reasons, you will be prompted by your browser to close the browser window. Choose "Yes" or "OK" when prompted to close the Logon Information and Status Page and to disconnect from CSUCI wireless access.
Campus access points will support the 802.11g and 802.11b wireless Internet protocols.
To use your computer with the University wireless network, we recommend you purchase an 802.11g wireless card for your laptop or desktop computer. 802.11g wireless network cards will support both 802.11g and 802.11b wireless connections.
Cisco 802.11g wireless cards are recommended for wireless access for both laptop and desktop computers at CSUCI. Cisco 802.11g wireless cards can be purchased through a number of online vendors, including CDW (http://www.cdw.com) and PCMall (http://www.pcmall.com)
Mac wireless access uses the Mac ?AirPort? card. The current model, AirPort Extreme, supports the 802.11g wireless protocol. You can upgrade your existing Mac by purchasing an AirPort card through the Apple Online Store for CSU Channel Islands.
