CSUCI, all of CSU system to close fall 2008 application period on Feb. 1

Camarillo, Calif., Jan. 16, 2008—California State University Channel Islands announced that it will stop accepting applications for first-time freshman candidates on Feb. 1, and effective immediately will not admit lower division transfer students, upper division transfer students who are not fully eligible, and students seeking a second baccalaureate degree for the fall 2008 semester.

Cal State Channel Islands recruitment and enrollment officials will be in contact with high school counselors to inform them of the Feb. 1 application deadline. CSUCI will continue to accept applications from transfer students who meet the minimum admission requirements of an upper division applicant.

“The University already has received thousands of applications from first-time freshman candidates who applied to CSUCI during the priority application period of Oct. 1 to Nov. 30 and are interested in attending CSUCI beginning in the fall 2008 semester,” explained Jane Sweetland, Dean of Enrollment Services at CSUCI. “This proposed budget cut would mean that we would not be able to grow our anticipated enrollment by approximately 500 students. Instead, CSUCI would stop growth and maintain its current enrollment numbers for the 2008-09 academic year.”

California State University Channel Islands had 3,600 students enrolled in the fall 2007 semester.

Freshman candidates who applied during the priority application period are currently being evaluated for admission and will receive an admission decision before the end of March.

The decision to close the freshman application period on Feb. 1 was made by California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed and the University presidents of the 23-campus system. It is a response to the reductions called for in Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed state budget and its impact on quality in higher education.
