Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 9, 2014 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) is pleased to present “All Grown Up: 20 Years of the North American Free Trade Agreement,” a mini-conference examining NATFA’s impact over the past two decades, Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library Exhibition Hall. The conference is free and open to the public with advance registration at go.csuci.edu/nafta. Breakfast is provided.

Sponsored by CI’s Political Science, Chicana/o Studies and History programs and supported by CI Instructionally Related Activities funds, the event brings together scholars presenting research and opposing views on two decades of NAFTA. Enacted in 1994 by the U.S., Mexico and Canada, the historic trade agreement was intended to enrich all three nations by eliminating barriers to trade and investment, lifting government regulations, and modifying labor and environmental laws. This one-day mini-conference invites the campus and public to join in exploring NAFTA’s impact, both good and bad, in a series of speakers and breakout panel sessions.

The event will feature keynote speaker David Bacon, photographer, journalist and author of the 2004 book, “The Children of NAFTA,” and concluding remarks by special guest speaker Ana Berenice Diaz Ceballos Parada, the Mexican consul based in Oxnard. Participants can also join in breakout panel sessions covering such topics as the economic impact of NAFTA, global capitalism, border control and migration, the exploitation of migrant farm workers, the Zapatista uprising, and violence against women in border towns.

Limited parking is available on campus with the purchase of a $6 daily permit; follow signs to the parking permit dispensers. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with bus service to and from the campus. Riders should board the CI Vista Bus to the campus; the cash-only fare is $1.25 each way. Buses arrive and depart from the Camarillo Metrolink Station every 30 minutes, Monday through Friday. For exact times, check the schedule at www.goventura.org.
