Camarillo, Calif., Sept. 23, 2014 – The Art program at CSU Channel Islands (CI) will present “Cathy Ellis + Megan Mueller: Some Other Time Travel” in the Napa Hall Gallery on the CI campus, Monday, Oct. 6, through Friday, Oct. 31. A free, public opening reception with the artists will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition is the first in a series that invites students and graduates of the Master of Fine Arts program at UCSB to present their work at CI’s Napa Hall Gallery, allowing an exchange of expertise and exhibition space between the two institutions. The collaboration also fosters mentoring relationships between UCSB graduates and CI undergraduates interested in pursuing careers in the fine arts.

Ellis is a recent graduate of UCSB’s MFA program and an award-winning artist whose paintings, drawings and sculptures have been featured in galleries locally and nationally. Her colorful paintings blend idealism and disaster with more everyday concerns like eating, sleeping, work and recreation. Each work begins with a local landscape, architectural structure or found object that preoccupies her mind and then builds into a loose narrative based on common human experiences, both real and imagined.

Mueller, a current graduate student in sculpture, has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. She combines her interests in both sculpture and drawing to create abstracted works of landscapes and natural forms. Mueller describes her work as “heavily influenced by stand-up comedy, the environment, weather, living in other people’s homes as a pet sitter, and the physicality of sculpture.”

The Napa Hall Art Gallery is located on Ventura Street on the CI campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, contact the CI Art program at 805-437-2772, email art@csuci.edu, or visit https://art.csuci.edu/exhibitions.
