Environmental Matters

Camarillo, Calif., March 27, 2015 – The Art program at CSU Channel Islands will present an exhibit titled, “Environmental Matters” at the CI Palm Gallery in Old Town Camarillo from Monday, April 6 through Wednesday, April 22. The artists invite the public to join them for an opening reception at the gallery on Thursday, April 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The environment in all its various forms is often a lead story on the front page of newspapers and web-based newsfeeds. Whether the stories center upon international climate summits, global warming, overburdened landfills, trash in the streets, or plastic in the oceans, they have become an inescapable source of urgent discussion. And, there is no better art medium than photography to starkly convey these problems faced by societies around the world.

This photography exhibition investigates both the aesthetic and grotesque nature of urban/suburban trash—its accumulation on the sidewalks and streets, parks and playgrounds, beaches and ocean. Does the trash, which always seems to be underfoot, have any art possibilities? While bringing attention to this ubiquitous problem, the exhibition “Environmental Matters” also explores the potential of trash as art.

The images in this exhibition were created by the advanced photography class: The Theory and Practice of Photography, and also features the work of an alumni, Ryan Alexander.

Located at 92 Palm Drive in Old Town Camarillo, the CI Palm Gallery is open and free to the public Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For additional information, contact the Art program at 805-437-2772 or art@csuci.edu.
