Financial Expert to Speak at CI

Carmel Wellso

Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 6, 2016 — Investors wondering about the effect of the Presidential election on financial markets can pose questions to an expert Friday, Oct. 14 at CSU Channel Islands (CI).

CI’s Institute for Global Economic Research (IGER) is presenting “The Presidential Election & Investment Implications” Friday, Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Malibu Hall, Room 100 on the CI campus.

The guest speaker will be Carmel Wellso, Director of Research and Portfolio Manager at Janus Capital, which manages $160 billion worth of funds. Wellso has 20 years of experience in finance and holds a Master of Business Administration from Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University.

Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics Professor of Economics Sung Won Sohn, Ph.D., will also discuss the potential effects of the election outcome on investments and financial markets.

Sung Won Sohn

“Generally a Presidential election increases uncertainty, especially when the incumbent is not running for re-election,” Sohn said. “We have candidates who each have a number of issues and as a result, the election will have a significant impact on the stock market and financial markets.”

Sohn and Wellso’s theories will be non-partisan and based on historical economic data, but Sohn said history tells us that the stock market is generally unsettled around an election year, but tends to improve throughout the President’s term.”

Aside from the election, there are two other pressures on the markets right now, Sohn said.

“Many people believe the stock market is overvalued,” Sohn said. “The second concern is the federal reserve possibly raising the interest rate.”

IGER, which is part of the Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics, will also provide lunch and complimentary parking.
