Long Grade Creek

Long Grade Creek

Camarillo, Calif., Sept. 8, 2016—CSU Channel Islands (CI) students, faculty and residents of University Glen will team up on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to Noon to pick up trash in a shared creek bed.

CI Manager of Environmental Compliance and Hazardous Materials Jennifer Lindquist is behind this first-ever effort as part of Coastal Cleanup Day, sponsored by the Ventura County Coalition for Coastal and Inland Waterways.

“We’ll have an opportunity to talk about campus pollution prevention programs,” Lindquist said. “Once we get the trash collected, we’ll weigh and survey it to see what kind of trash we have.”

Knowing what kind of trash the campus and University Glen generates is important for the Storm Water Program, a state program that oversees efforts to reduce trash in waterways. A trash survey will help Lindquist determine what sorts of storm water management the University and University Glen need.

Sponsored statewide by the California Coastal Commission, Coastal Cleanup Day is California’s largest annual volunteer event. It falls on the third Saturday of each September as volunteers pick up trash along more than 2,000 miles of coastal and inland shoreline.

Campus and University Glen volunteers will show up at the A-3 parking lot, adjacent to University Drive, at 9 a.m. and the City of Camarillo will provide gloves, trash and recycle bags, data cards, pencils, water and sunscreen.

Some students will get volunteer credit from their professors if they participate, but Lindquist believes there is a reason to volunteer that goes beyond academic credit.

“It is a good feeling to know we are good stewards of this beautiful environment,” Lindquist said.
