Camarillo, Calif., Sept. 13, 2016 — Perhaps best-known for the hit “The Way It Is,” Grammy® Award-winning musical artist Bruce Hornsby will perform at Ojai’s Libbey Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 8 in a concert to benefit CSU Channel Islands (CI).
The fundraiser under the stars will be the first President’s Dinner & Concert for new CI President Erika Beck, who took the helm of the University in August.
“I can’t think of a better way to greet the community than with a night of music in one of the county’s most beautiful outdoor venues,” Beck said. “This gives me a chance to thank all of those who continue to support this gem of a University.”
Concert tickets are available for $75 with the proceeds going to benefit scholarship opportunities and academic programs at CI.
The concert itself promises classics from Hornsby’s 30-year career, variety, expert showmanship and maybe a few surprises, as Hornsby explained in a recent interview with “The Scene.”
“For 26 years, there’s no set list,” Hornsby said. “It keeps it forever fresh. You see the band and they’re looking at me because they don’t know what I’m going to do…it’s very much in the moment.”
CI Vice President for University Advancement Nichole Ipach said funds raised by the concert will go toward the highest needs of the University.
“In the past the funds have supported programs like undergraduate research, student scholarships and the launch of critical academic programs such as nursing or equipping the library,” Ipach said.
According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, CI is the second-fastest growing University in the nation among public institutions who offer master’s degrees.
Because CI cannot fully rely on state funding, the surrounding community has stepped in to support the only four-year public University in Ventura County. The University, in turn supports the county with well-prepared graduates ready to fill the jobs necessary for the region to thrive.
This fall, CI welcomed a record 2,152 undergraduates, freshmen and transfer students, a number expected to increase steadily. Currently, total enrollment is about 6,200 students with that number forecast to rise to approximately 10,000 by the year 2025. Of those students, 54 percent are first-generation college students and 82 percent receive financial aid.
