CI Art Exhibit
Camarillo, Calif., September 26, 2016 — Three exhibits scheduled to go up Oct. 3 in Napa Hall at CSU Channel Islands (CI) range from the spiritual to whimsical to sobering.
“A Cosmology of Pattern and Play” will open in the Napa Gallery with “The Final Touch!” and “This is What Hope Looks Like” will be on display in the CI Palm Temporary gallery.
"This very varied show exemplifies the postmodern era in which we live: a world in which tragedy, hope, futility, cosmology and mysticism live side-by-side,” said Art Lecturer Christophe Bourély. “It is a delight for the entirety of our mind and senses".
The opening reception for all three exhibits will be Thursday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Napa Hall. The exhibitions will run from Oct. 3 through 20.
A sand and glitter floor installation linked to a series of dense and intricate paintings on the gallery walls will be a highlight of “A Cosmology of Pattern and Play” by artist Carole Silverstein.
Silverstein uses Mylar as a canvas to create a floating quality to her rich and luminous work, which seeks to slow people down and entrance them, she said.
“When you see the work, the light shifts as you move through the space,” Silverstein said. “I’m using patterns from different cultures that use different symbolism. I explore the symbolism from a mystical point of view.”
The Los Angeles-based artist uses, for example, Islamic geometric patterns, Japanese wave or cloud patterns, Celtic knotwork and Spanish interlace.
Two CI graduates will have their work exhibited in the CI Palm Temporary Gallery.
Studio Art graduate Tammy Gilkey’s exhibit, “This is What Hope Looks Like” is a collection of paintings exploring the face of hope in an uncertain world.
Currently, an art therapy instructor at Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families, Gilkey hopes her paintings inspire compassion for vulnerable refugees, often children trying to survive as the war around them robs them of their homes, their families and their innocence.
“So many of these children without parents and siblings to watch over them have been lost to sex trafficking and have disappeared from the safety and protection of communities,” Gilkey wrote in her artist’s statement. “We cannot allow fear to drive us from the humanity of helping those in need.”
CI Art graduate Gabriel Garcia Alvarez explores a whimsical First World theme with her photography exhibit entitled “The Final Touch!”
Alvarez’s photography exhibit consists of photos from two of her photography books: “Shoes with Jewelry,” and “Lipstick and Nail Polish.”
The books reflect the Santa Maria resident’s interest in shoes, jewelry, lipstick and nail polish.
In her artist’s statement, Alvarez said that “if any of these items are combined in any way, they will help to add that final touch that would make any ensemble successful.”
Limited parking is available on campus with the purchase of a $6 daily permit; follow signs to the parking permit dispensers. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road with bus service to and from the campus. Riders should board the CI Vista Bus to the campus; the cash-only fare is $1.25 each way. Buses arrive and depart from the Camarillo Metrolink Station every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. For exact times, check the schedule at www.goventura.org.
