Weekly Construction Activity Update                        

Planned activities are as follows for the week of 10/03/2011:

Entrance Road:

This project includes the construction of the new Entrance Road, the undergrounding of overhead utilities, a new levee along Long Grade Canyon Creek, electrical and communication duct banks, new street lighting, irrigation along with the new paving of streets and sidewalks at Santa Barbara Drive, the renovation of the A-4 Parking Lot, and grading behind Modoc Hall.

The Entrance Road contract includes various scopes of work that make up the overall project. Some of these scope items include:

New Entrance Road to Campus

The contractors continue to import soil to raise the grade of the new road, while finishing the installation of electrical and communication duct banks, storm drains, the re-routing /undergrounding of existing utilities, and the finishing touches on the vehicular and the pedestrian bridges. Preparations are also being made for the traffic signal work at Lewis Road.

Flood Control Levee

Contractors have completed the soil cement stabilization process at the sub-grade, and are importing soil to build the new Flood Control Levee starting at Calleguas Creek and heading east. This week’s activities will include building up the levee east of the vehicular bridge to University Drive.

Santa Barbara Street Upgrades

Santa Barbara Street is open to through traffic. Irrigation has been completed and contractors have scheduled the hydro-seed operation for this week. New, more efficient lighting has been installed and is near completion. Punch list items are continuing along with the beautification of the buildings on the south side of the street.

North Hall Project:

The North Hall Building has numerous facets to the project. Below are some of the various scopes of work that make up the overall project:

North Hall Faculty Building (Existing Building Renovation)

New aluminum windows are being installed in both the existing Faculty Building and the new Classroom Building. On the second level, metal stud framing of interior wall partitions are in progress. Rough-in of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing utilities in both buildings is continuing. Formwork for the concrete walls at the new elevator at the Faculty Building is in progress.  Re-roofing of the Faculty Building continues. The existing clay roof tiles will be cleared of biological growth and reused. Mechanical heating and air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing rough-in continue.

North Hall Classroom Building (New Construction)

The steel deck at the roof level is now ready for the concrete slab. Roof framing is about to begin. Mechanical heating and air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing rough-in continue. Window openings are being prepared for window installation. Grading around the building has been completed. The stairs to the third level are complete and the building is being wrapped for lath and plaster.

Solano Hall Second Floor

Office Improvements to the second floor of Solano Hall are nearly complete. Next week the doors will be installed, the conference room glass partition will go up, light fixture installation will commence and carpet tiles will be laid. This project is due to be complete and ready for move in the week of October 24th.

President’s Courtyard

New hardscape, landscape and a garden wall are being built in the President’s Courtyard west of University Hall. Paving will be placed next week. Plastering of the garden wall will also begin.

 Manzanita / Solano Courtyard

The courtyard between Manzanita and Solano Halls has been re-done. New hardscape provides accessible paths to both buildings as well as a newly cut pass through from Ventura Street to the North Quad. When North Hall is completed before the fall of 2012, this will provide a pedestrian link to the west side of the campus.

 University Drive Access Road to North Quad

â  As part of the North Hall project, an improved fire truck and pedestrian pathway from University Drive to the North Quad is in the planning stages. New lighting is planned as well.

 Ventura Street Access Road to North Quad

Improvements to the access road, from Ventura Street to the North Quad, are also planned. These will include pavement and energy efficient lighting.

 North Quad Access and Lighting Improvements

Improved emergency vehicle access and lighting is in the works, presently at the planning stage. This will include a new 15-foot wide loop around the Quad, linking the new North Hall Classroom Building, Solano and Napa Halls, the Nursing Sim Lab and the Petite and Grand Salons. Energy efficient light poles will be incorporated into the design.

A new sidewalk will complete the accessible path at the RA Parking Lot south of University Hall and West of Placer Hall. Improved fire truck access and street lighting will also be completed in this area, including a new equipment enclosure to the north.

Renovation Projects:

 South Quad Entrances

Two rolled curbs with a relaxed slope were installed at South Quad Entrances adjacent to Bell Tower West and another adjacent to Topanga Hall.

El Dorado Hall Renovations

Phase I of the El Dorado Hall Renovations involved demolition of some of the walls inside the building, installation of new carpeting in the main lobby and front office, re-paint walls and ceilings, and renovation of the kitchen area. VISTA offices will be located in El Dorado Hall.

 Hillside Stabilization

Hillside Stabilization at Water Tanks #1 & #2 – The hillside was cut back, steel dowels inserted into the hillside and covered with reinforcement mesh and concrete to protect the domestic main water supply pipes from being covered with large amounts of soil due to erosion.

 Bell Tower Deck Replacement

Bell Tower Tile Deck Replacement workers ripped out the old tile deck, water proofed the surface, and installed a new color texture coating.

This project included the replacement of the existing walkway at the main entrance to Placer Hall as well as the installation of a new ADA pathway in front of the building.

OPC Painters have painted the exterior of the Napa Hall and have rejuvenated the building for the Art Department.

Napa Hall Interior Lighting Upgrade involved campus staff replacing the existing fixtures with newer energy efficient fixtures that were salvaged and recycled from a larger remodel on campus.

 Bell Tower Air Handler Units

HVAC upgrades in Bell Tower Classrooms 2505, 2515, 2572, 2582, and 2598 in which the Alcoves in 2582 and 2515 were closed off and made into mechanical rooms that will house the new air handler units.

 Los Angeles Street Lighting Project

Street Light Replacements on Los Angeles Avenue involves campus staff replacing the existing fixtures with new energy efficient lighting.

Santa Barbara Street Refresh

Santa Barbara Street Refresh project includes the repairs of the irrigation system, landscape renovations and a refresh of the building facades that include roof cleaning, glazing repairs and paint.
