General Information

California State University Channel Islands will hold the 5th Annual STEM Exposition in conjunction with Ventura County Education’s Science Fair office on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. STEM organizations from across the county will have the opportunity to reach nearly 1,000 middle and high school students eager to learn about countywide opportunities in STEM careers and hands-on experiences with STEM.

Goal of the STEM Expo

The STEM Expo, has the goal of providing students with a vision of how their interest science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) could lead to a future career. We are recruiting  STEM companies and organizations to coordinate booths where representatives of a company will engage the students in hands-on science/ technology, provide information about the science behind their company/ organization, and encourage the students to continue their STEM education.

Get Involved

Companies are expected to be present at the STEM Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Set-up of booths will be from 8 - 9:30 a.m. All booths must be set-up by 9:30 AM for the opening of the STEM Expo at 10 AM. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants the day of the event.

What is the STEM Expo? The STEM Expo is a hands-on science event provided to middle and high school students as well as teachers and judges who are attending the Ventura County Science Fair. Students learn about STEM careers through interactive displays provided by regional companies, organizations, or colleges/ universities. The event is free to attendees.

Is the STEM Expo open to the public? The is not open to the public but is provided to middle and high school students as well as teachers and judges who are attending the Ventura County Science Fair.

Is there a cost to participate in the STEM Expo?There is no charge for organizations to participate in the STEM Expo. Parking is also free at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

What is the format of the STEM Expo? The STEM Expo is open to attendees of the Science Fair in hour and a half blocks during the morning and early afternoon. During these two blocks, middle and high school students interact with the displays and presenters. To encourage students to visit as many booths as possible, we provide a stamp card that the students can bring to the boothes. After interacting with the presenters, the students receive a stamp on their card.  When the card is full, students can submit it to a raffle for a beany Giant Microbe.

What kind of a display are you interested in having at the STEM Expo? We would like boothes as much as possible to engage the students in hands-on science. If possible, bring tactile items that showcases how your organization engages in STEM-related work.

What will be provided to organizations displaying at the STEM Expo? We will provide organizations with 8' tables along with a red table cloth. The number of tables that you will need, and whether you need electricity, a wall behind your booth for display purposes, or an outside location for your booth, can be specified on the application to participate in the STEM Expo. Feel free to bring back-drop display, banner or tablecloth.

The STEM Expo is organized by CSU Channel Islands under the auspices of a Department of Education Hispanic-Serving Institutions STEM grant.
