The Recreation Center is home to the Health and Fitness component of Campus Recreation. The fitness area provides opportunities to develop cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. Cardiovascular amenities of the fitness center include treadmills, stair climbers, recumbent cycles, stationary cycles and elliptical trainers. The resistance training amenities include selectorized Cybex stations, a power cage, a cable crossover, a selection of free weight benches, a large selection of dumbbells from 2 – 120 pounds, and more than 2,000 pounds of Olympic plates. Cardiovascular training, general conditioning, resistance training, and flexibility programs are offered free of charge Dolphin Passport holders.

Fitness Orientation

New Dolphin Passport members are required to complete a fitness orientation before utilizing the amenities at the Recreation Center.  A fitness orientation may be scheduled after we receive your completed (and approved) health history form. The orientation will be approximately 30 minutes in duration and may be scheduled with other participants.

During the orientation a member of the Campus Recreation staff will:

1. Inform participants of the policies and procedures of the Recreation Center
2. Inform participants of the basic policies and procedures of their Dolphin Passport
3. Provide general instruction on proper use of the cardiovascular and selectorized resistance equipment
4. Familiarize participants with the facility layout
5. Describe various fitness and recreation programs available

First Workout

The first workout program is optional and is designed for members who would like to have in-depth instruction and guidance on proper use of the Cybex selectorized strength machines and cardiovascular equipment (members may complete the fitness orientation before requesting a first workout).  During a first workout the fitness staff member will provide the same information as a Fitness Orientation as well as guide you through a complete circuit training workout; provide proper exercise form instruction, seat adjustments and weight selection will be monitored and recorded for the participant on a personal workout card.

Fitness Challenges

The "CI Fitness Pentathlon"

The CI Fitness Pentathlon is a spring semester team challenge and promises to be a great deal of fun! The CI Fitness Pentathlon is designed as an individual and team challenge. The CI Fitness Pentathlon is primarily an endurance challenge to test the durability and strength of competitors. So start training, form your teams and claim your spot amongst the competitors. This challenge promises to get your heart racing and keep it there for the duration of the spring semester.

Indoor 5K Run/Walk
Lace up the Air Nike’s and get ready to compete against your fellow CSUCI family!  Each competitor will be timed on how long it takes to complete 5 kilometers on the treadmill.  Challenge your friends and build up your ego, rain or shine, the competition will go on!

Indoor 10-Mile Bike
Picture the fabulous sites of good ole’ France during the Tour de France, as you pedal on the Cybex bike.  Ride along ten miles of difficult terrain, where at the end a yellow jersey or other prize is calling your name.  This competition challenges the advanced to strive for a personal best time and encourages the newcomers to reach the finish line. 

Mt. Everest Challenge
Step your way to better fitness while experiencing the thrill of climbing Mt. Everest at an altitude of 29,028 feet above sea level.  This challenge requires you to climb the mountain, using our Steppers.  Each floor climbed will be equivalent to 10 feet up the mountain, so if you do the math, it equals 2,902 floors.  Don’t panic, you have fifteen weeks to complete the journey!

Mt. Kilimanjaro Challenge
Learn to climb your way to the top and improve your cardiovascular fitness.  Step to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, 19,340 feet, without leaving sweet home Camarillo.  Utilizing the Steppers, you get twelve weeks to complete 1,934 floors.

Mt. McKinley Challenge
Close to home, Mt. McKinley is the highest mountain in North America at an amazing altitude of 14,690 ft.  In seven weeks, you can reach the top by completing 1,469 floors.

Indoor Rowing Regatta
Row yourself to a healthier body without getting wet.  The regatta consists of racing 2,500 meters on the Concept II rowing ergometer.  Forget the swimsuits, throw on some gym shoes and come to the Recreation Center for a challenge on calm waters.

Bench Press Competition
Come one, come all and test your strength.  This is the perfect time to beat your personal best or achieve those goals.  Offered many times throughout the school year, this is a great competition to challenge your best buds!

Co-Rec Team Bench Press
Hercules find your Zena and test your combined strength in the co-ed bench press competition.  As a team, you and a member of the other gender, can challenge not only others but your own physical ability.

Indoor Triathlon
Test your mental and physical toughness in this difficult fitness challenge. The Recreation Center utilizes treadmills, stationary cycles, and rowers in what proves to be a true test of endurance. If you like a challenge, the indoor triathlon is for you!

Fitness Clubs

Century Club
Participants must complete a minimum of 100 workouts in the fitness center during the Academic Year to become a member of the Century Club. Show your dedication and will power and become a member today!

The High Peaks Club
This club is for those with the dedication, desire and endurance to successfully complete all three mountain challenges (Mt. Everest, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and Mt. McKinley).  Become an elite member of this club – start climbing your way to fitness today!

The 300/135 Club
Set your goals now and become an elite member of the 300/135 Club. Men who can bench press 300lbs. and women who can lift 135lbs. meet the guidelines for this special honor. So hit the Recreation Center and start pumping some iron!
