Sailing 101
This class is for anyone who has the desire to learn how to sail. Participants will learn everything they need to know in order to be confident and safe in the Channel Islands Harbor in Pico sailboats. With friends and a trained instructor in the boat, each participant will soon be on his/her way to sailing and turning with ease. The course's safety component will be "Boating Under the Influence." The class will meet at Channel Islands Harbor and will cover sailing material as it pertains to the skills and topics covered. Upon completion of the class, participants are required to attend one open use day at the waterfront to reinforce their newly acquired skills before advancing to Sailing 201.

Sailing 201
This course is designed to challenge participants who have completed and passed Sailing 101 or have prior sailing experience. The course's safety component will be "The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide." The class will meet at Channel Islands Harbor and focus on sailing Capri 16.5 sailboats, safety, sailing technique/confidence, "rules of the road," seamanship skills, and taking on a deeper understanding of sail theory with a bigger sailboat.
Sailing 201
Open Use Sailing Skipper Qualification
This class is an evaluation and is designed to determine if participants have the foundational skills necessary to safely handle a sailboat as a skipper. The class is required for participants wanting to skipper any sailboat during Open Use or skipper a CFJ during CI sailing practice. Participants must demonstrate correct body position and verbal commands for tacking and jibing, be able to sail in all points of wind confidently, know the basics of "rules of the road," and be able to dock without the assistance of their crew.
Sailboat Test-out
This practical evaluation is available for participants who feel they are competent sailors and already possess the fundamental skills covered in Sailing 101 and 201and want to skipper a Pico, Capri or CFJ either for open use or to sail outside the harbor.
Sailing Skipper and Sailboat Test-out
Outside Ocean Qualified
This theory-based assessment reviews many of the topics explained in Sailing 101, 201 and open water sailing and also presents aspects of ocean sailing/kayaking that any skipper/paddler must be knowledgeable of prior to sailing/kayaking outside the harbor. The participants completing the review questions are encouraged to take their time and work with other participants. Please allow one day of review before an Outside Ocean Qualification can be granted.
Performance Sailing
Whether your goal is sailing fast around a race course or making it to Ventura and back before sunset, you will want to step up to our Performance Sailing course. With this course, you will learn how to fly a spinnaker on a CFJ and sail as efficiently as possible. This course will be taught by our top instructors, who will cover the finer points of boat handling: how to use crew weight to your advantage, reduce rudder drag, roll tack and jibe, advanced sail trim, and how and when to use the boomvang, outhaul, Cunningham and other sail controls. This course is also a review of the basics as well as more advanced techniques including docking, anchoring, crew overboard recovery, and heavy weather sailing, all of which will be covered.
