Student Leader of the Year Awards

Silver dolphin award

Based on Susan Komives's Leadership Identity Development Model, the following awards represent outcomes that student leaders should master as they develop to their fullest leadership potential and formulate their leadership identity.  Each level is cumulative, building on the next, representing the growth of beginning student leaders through seasoned student leaders.  The seasoned leader represents the ultimate outcome of a student who is prepared to graduate and become a leader in our multicultural society.

The Outstanding First Year Student Leader Award 

This award is presented to a first year/freshman student leader.  The recipient of this award:

  • Is involved in one or more groups/organizations/programs
  • Thoroughly carried out responsibilities as a member or leader in the group/organization/program 
  • Can articulate characteristics of leaders throughout history and in society today
  • Is committed to developing personal skills such as public speaking, member motivation, and active listening
  • Possesses an awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses and seeks to develop and utilize these accordingly 
  • Displays a high level of self-confidence
  • Recognizes leadership potential in self 
  • Maintains a commitment to academic excellence

The Outstanding Sophomore Student Leader Award 

This award is presented to a second/sophomore-year student leader.  The recipient of this award:

  • Serves in multiple roles in organizations and utilizes multiple leadership styles in those roles
  • Explores new ways to involve members of the group/organization/program
  • Sees the value of being an active and engaged group member
  • Role models the way for others
  • Values talents/skills of group members and values collaborating with others
  • Takes on more complex leadership challenges
  • Engages in reflective learning about oneself
  • Maintains a commitment to academic excellence

The Outstanding Junior Student Leader Award 

This award is presented to a third/junior-year student leader. The recipient of this award:

  • Understands that leadership is exhibited through behaviors and not necessarily position
  • Engages in shared, participative leadership (e.g. seeks out opportunities to co-chair an event)
  • Is able to work effectively with a diverse population and is open to multiple perspectives
  • Sees role as a facilitator and community builder and values team
  • Understands personal influence over others and begins coaching others in the group/organization/program
  • Demonstrates the values of servant leadership and seeks to serve society
  • Processes through leadership experiences with others to make meaning
  • Maintains a commitment to academic excellence

The Outstanding Senior Student Leader Award(s)

Both the Senior Leadership Awards and the Silver Dolphin Award will be recognized at the Student Leadership Awards and awarded during Honor’s Convocation. These awards are presented to a fourth/senior-year student leader. The recipient of this award:

  • Seeks to build the sustainability of group/organization/program and leadership pipeline.
  • Mentors younger peers.
  • Understands the complexity of organizations and assesses the context to determine role necessary.
  • Seeks new experiences to align with his/her values.
  • Possesses a solid personal philosophy on leadership.
  • Possesses a clear understanding of personal values and importance of integrity.
  • Can articulate their passion for causes and change.
  • Understands self-development and life-long learning as a process.
  • Possesses long-term goals and plan of action toward achieving them.
  • Possesses confidence to work with others in various contexts/organizations.
  • Understands that he/she does not need to hold positional leadership roles to serve as a leader.
  • Maintains a commitment to academic excellence.
