What requirements must be fulfilled to earn a Bachelor’s degree? [top]

Earn a minimum of 120 units

Refer to the University Catalog for the academic year in which you were admitted to your degree program for details regarding your particular major and unit requirements. No more than 70 units taken at a community college or another two-year college may be applied to this total, excluding military credit and credit by examination. Additionally, no more than 24 units taken through Extension may be applied to this total.

Earn a minimum of 30 units in residence

At least 30 of the total units must be taken at CSU Channel Islands excluding Open University and Extension units. At least 24 of these 30 units must be upper division coursework, and 12 of the 30 units must be in the major. At least 9 units of upper division interdisciplinary General Education courses (numbered in the 330-349 or 430-449 ranges) of the required 48 General Education units must be completed in residence at CSU Channel Islands.

Earn a minimum of 40 Upper Division Units

At least 40 of the total required units for graduation must be in courses numbered 300-499.

Complete the General Education (GE) pattern

You are required to complete a specific pattern of approved GE courses. Please see the University Catalog for the academic year in which you were admitted to CSUCI.  A minimum of nine upper division interdisciplinary units must be completed in residence at CSU Channel Islands.

Satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

The Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement will be satisfied through the completion of 9 units of Upper-Division Interdisciplinary General Education courses, which are writing intensive. (SP 14-03)  Upper-Division Interdisciplinary General Education courses are numbered 330-349 and 430-449.

Satisfy Major Requirements

Specific course and unit requirements must be earned for your particular major. Refer to the University Catalog for the academic year in which you were admitted to your degree program.

Maintain minimum 2.00 Grade Point Average (GPA)

An overall GPA of 2.00 is required in:

  • Total courses attempted
  • CSU Channel Islands courses attempted
  • Courses in the major
  • Courses in the minor

Satisfy Title V: United States History, Constitution and American Ideals Requirement

Students are required to demonstrate competencies in United States History, United States Constitution, and California State and local government for graduation. Government courses completed outside the state of California will not meet the state and local government requirement.  Please see University Catalog for course options.

Satisfy Foreign Language Requirement

The language requirement can be met by satisfying General Education category C3a with a grade of “C” or better. Students may also receive content credit for having advanced proficiency in a language other than English.

Satisfy Multicultural Requirement

The multicultural requirement can be met by satisfying General Education category C3b with a grade of “C” or better.
Please refer to the University Catalog for more information regarding the above requirements.

Can I complete a minor or certificate along with my Bachelor’s degree? [top]

Yes. Notify your academic advisor to receive advisement and to complete a Request for Change of Major/Minor form. You may submit this form to Enrollment Services prior to your graduation date to inform us of your intention to pursue a minor/certificate, or you may declare your minor/certificate on your Application for Degree and Diploma.

The award of a minor/certificate will be reflected on your transcript but not on your diploma. Your minor can only be awarded at the same time as your Bachelor's degree and not afterwards.

Can I complete two majors simultaneously? [top]

You may complete two major programs simultaneously, but both major programs must be completed by your graduation date. If two baccalaureate programs, one leading to a BA and one leading to a BS, are completed concurrently, those degrees and the completed major or majors leading to each degree will be acknowledged on your diploma. Your diploma and transcript will note the completion of both major programs. A second major is not a second Bachelor’s degree.

What is the difference between Graduation and Commencement? [top]

Commencement is the formal ceremony that is held each May to recognize and honor the achievements of degree candidates, graduates, and teaching credential recipients. It is NOT the same as graduation.

Graduation is the conferral of a degree and the issuance of a diploma. A student graduates when he/she has filed an application for graduation and has fulfilled all the requirements for their degree. Students who have applied for graduation may participate in the Commencement ceremony, but this participation does not imply that they have graduated or that they have completed degree requirements.
