César Chávez Day of Service and Learning Celebration:  April 1-2

The Centers for Community Engagement and Multicultural Engagement and the Chicana/o Studies and History programs will host a series of two-day events to celebrate the César Chávez Day of Service and Learning. All events will be free and open to the campus community and the community at large. Parking will be by permit only.

Seeds of Change — Wednesday, April 1 from 10-11:30 a.m., Broome Library, Room 1360

Seeds of Change: Interdisciplinary Panel on Sustainable Agriculture – Come hear a diverse panel of experts as they explore the status and future of ecologically sound and sustainable agriculture methods.

Screening of The Garden — Wednesday, April 1 from 12-2 p.m., Broome Library, Room 1756

Come join us for a movie screening of the Oscar-nominated film The Garden. The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods.

The Peregrinación: Walking Into History — Wednesday, April 1 from 5:30-7 p.m., Broome Library, Room 1420

CSU Channel Islands unveils the César Chávez Foundation traveling exhibit - "The Peregrinación: Walking Into History." The Peregrinación documents through photos the historic five-year strike by Latino and Filipino vineyard workers and the 350-mile peregrinación, or pilgrimage, from Delano to Sacramento that thrust La Causa, the cause, of striking farm workers, squarely before the nation’s conscience. Join us for appetizers and social justice poetry readings. This exhibit will run from March 20 through April 8.

César and Me: Past and Present — Thursday, April 2 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Broome Library, Room 1320

Come and view art works by Chicano artist Daniel DeSiga. DeSiga will show 12 original pieces of his past modern and current art series. DeSiga‘s most recognized art depicts the plight of Mexican farm workers including El Campesino and La Cosecha. He is also known for his large murals include Seagull Fly in the Sky.

NOTE: From 1-2 p.m. in Broome Library Room 1320, DeSiga will be giving a presentation on his past and present works. This event is open to the public.

Open Art Studio: Daniel DeSiga — Thursday, April 2 from 3-5 p.m., The Hub lobby

Chicano artist Daniel DeSiga conducts an art workshop open to all CSU Channel Islands students and community members. Bring only your artistic sprit as art materials will be provided.

Roberto Vargas: Family Activism — Thursday, April 2 from 7-8:30 p.m., Broome Library, Room 1360

CSUCI will host nationally recognized author, facilitator and planning consultant Dr. Roberto Vargas. Dr. Vargas is the author of Family Activism which provides family and community leaders essential tools to encourage healthier, more successful and powerful families, organizations and communities.
