OPC lists efforts to integrate sustainability practices - May 2009

Updated: -

The Operations, Planning, and Construction Department (OPC) has been busy in its efforts to minimize CSUCI’s impact on the environment by integrating sustainability into its planning, design, construction and operational practices. However, sometimes communication of these activities doesn’t keep up with the pace of their implementation, and so it is in that spirit that we share with you recent energy and economic savings.

For example, the chillers in drinking fountains have been turned off, the old gymnasium lights have been replaced with new, more efficient lamps, and building thermostats have been re-programmed to maintain temperatures between 68 and 78 degrees (in compliance with Chancellor Executive Order 987). These measures are already reducing campus greenhouse gas emissions and saving utility costs. Over the summer and next fall OPC plans to achieve the following energy savings measures:

  • Campus computers will be programmed to automatically shut down, with the first phase starting with the computer labs.
  • The use of space heaters and small refrigerators will be either eliminated or limited.
  • Landscaping along Santa Barbara Avenue, Ventura Avenue, and in North Quad, South Quad and Central Mall will be irrigated with reclaimed water.
  • Energy-efficient light bulbs, occupancy sensors and day-light sensors will be installed in most existing buildings, as well as efficient exterior lighting and street fixtures.
  • Upgrades to Aliso Hall HVAC system will reduce energy consumption.
  • In addition, OPC has developed design standards for new buildings that incorporate sustainable strategies, using recycled materials and rapidly renewable resources, and energy efficient heating, cooling and lighting systems. Planning will allow for flexibility to accommodate future uses, all in an effort to decrease the campus’ impact on the local, regional and global environment.

A sustainability Web site is slated to be completed by the beginning of the fall semester. You will find relevant sustainability articles, updates on CSUCI’s continuing and new practices, important links to resources, and events. As we continue to nurture our sustainability program, the Web site will contain links to green course listings, community connections, student and research activities, and more will be added.
