How do I know if I must participate in Early Start Math?

Skills assessments are designed to assess the level of mathematics/quantitative reasoning skills of students entering the CSU. Unless the requirement has been fulfilled, freshmen must enroll in appropriate general education mathematics/quantitative reasoning courses in their first academic year. The following are the system-wide skills assessment standards for GE mathematics/quantitative reasoning.

GE Requirement in Math is fulfilled if students fall into any of the below categories:

  • A score of 3 or above on either the AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam
  • A score of 3 or above on the AP Statistics exam or IB test
  • Completion of a college course that satisfies the requirement of General Education Quantitative Reasoning with a grade of C- or better.

Students are recommended to be placed in a GE Math course if they fall into any of the below categories:

  • A result of “Standard Exceeded: Ready for CSU or participating CCC college-level coursework in mathematics” on the CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP) exam
  • A score of 570 or above on the mathematics section of the “new” SAT or 550 or above on the mathematics section of the “old” SAT
  • A score of 550 or above on the SAT Subject Test in Mathematics (level 1 or 2)
  • A score of 23 or above on the ACT Mathematics test

Students are recommended to be placed in a supported GE Math course if they fall into any of the below categories:

  • A result of “Standard Met: Conditionally Ready for CSU or participating CCC college-level coursework in mathematics” on the CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP) exam and completion of an approved math course in the 12th grade with a grade of C- or better*
  • A score between 520-560 on the mathematics section of the “new” SAT or 490-540 on the mathematics section of the “old” SAT and completion of an approved math course in the 12th grade with a grade of C- or better*
  • A score of 20-22 on the mathematics portion of the ACT exam and completion of an approved math course in the 12th grade with a grade of C- or better*

*Approved courses (one full year of the same course) are those with a prerequisite of Algebra II or Integrated Math III, including: Trigonometry, Math Analysis, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus AB or BC, AP Physics, or AP Statistics.

Students are required to be placed in a supported GE math course if they fall into any of the below categories:

  • A result of “Nearly Met or Not Met” on the CAASPP Early Assessment Program (EAP) in mathematics exam
  • A score between 510 or below on the mathematics section of the “new” SAT or 480 or below on the mathematics section of the “old” SAT
  • A score of 19 or below on the mathematics portion of the ACT exam
