CSU Channel Islands considers multiple assessments in determining what math course a student will take in the fall and whether Early Start is REQUIRED or RECOMMENDED over the summer (before they enter their freshman year).

CSUCI students, REGARDLESS of their major, are REQUIRED to participate in Early Start Math if they have NOT met ANY of the below indicators:
  • Scored Standard Met or Nearly Met on the EAP Smarter Balanced Assessment Exam for Math; OR
  • Scored above a 520 on the Math section of the New SAT (taken March 2016 and after) and completed a 12th grade math course beyond Algebra 2 with a grade C- or better; OR
  • Scored above a 480 on the Math section of the Old SAT (taken prior to March 2016) and completed a 12th grade math course beyond Algebra 2 with a grade of C- or better; OR
  • Scored above a 19 on the Math portion of the ACT

 

Early Start is RECOMMENDED (but not required) for STEM or Pre-STEM majors if they meet ANY of the below indicators:
  • 9th - 11th grade math GPA is greater than or equal to 3.3; OR
  • Scored Standard Met or Nearly Met on the EAP Smarter Balanced Assessment Exam for Math; OR
  • Scored above a 510 on the Math section of the New SAT (taken March 2016 and after); OR
  • Scored above a 480 on the Math section of the Old SAT (taken prior to March 2016); OR
  • Scored above a 19 on the Math portion of the ACT

STEM and Pre-STEM Majors include: Applied Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM), Information Technology, Mathematics, Mechatronics Engineering, and Pre-Nursing.
