    Ernesto Guerrero Ed.D.

    Director of Academic Advising

    Ernesto joined the Advising Center in March 2016. He comes to CI from UCLA where he served in various positions in academic advising. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with minors in Education Studies and Applied Developmental Psychology, a Master’s degree in Counseling in Student Affairs, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, all from UCLA. He is excited to be a part of the CI community and looks forward to helping students achieve their academic goals.

    Monica Rivas

    Associate Director of Advising

    Monica joined the Academic Advising Office fall of 2006 as a graduate intern and was then hired in January of 2007. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from University of California Santa Barbara and a Master's from California Lutheran University in Counseling and Guidance. She grew up in Oxnard and loves being able to work in her community, motivating, advocating for and assisting students in their educational journey at CSUCI. Monica currently serves as the Staff Co-Chair for the Chicana/o Latina/o Faculty Staff Association and is club co-advisor for I.D.E.A.S. and Ballet Folklorico at CSU Channel Islands student clubs.

  • Hannah Smit

    Coordinator of Targeted Graduation Initiatives

    Hannah holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from UC Irvine, and a Master’s degree in Educational Counseling at University of La Verne. She joined CI after serving as an Undergraduate Advisor and a Graduate Program Assistant at UC Santa Barbara for nine years. She also worked as a Student Services Assistant for almost two years at Southwestern Law School.

    Kristen Dobson

    Special Populations Coordinator, Academic Advisor

    Kristen joined the Advising Center in November 2014. She graduated from CI in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She has studied abroad in Europe and New Zealand while at CI and has a passion for traveling. She continued on to a Master’s degree in Counseling from the Graduate School of Education at California Lutheran University. She is excited to be here at CI again as an Advisor to help students reach their academic goals.

    Daniela Ochoa

    Peer Academic Advising Program Coordinator, Academic Advisor

    Daniela received her Bachelor's degrees in Sociology and Spanish from California Lutheran University and went on to obtain her Masters of Education in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs from the University of Southern California. Prior to CI, Daniela worked as an undergraduate academic advisor at USC.

    Sara Alcala


    Sara has been working at CI since 2005 and has two decades of experience working in schools, from elementary through university grade levels. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from CSUN and a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from California Lutheran University. In Advising, Sara facilitates workshops, campus events, activities and provides resources related to graduate school and postbaccalaureate planning. Prior to her position in Advising, she worked in the Graduate Studies Center at CSUCI. She enjoys helping students achieve their academic and postbac goals.

    Graduation Advisor

    Eileen joined the Advising Center in July 2017. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance (emphasis in College Student Personnel), both from California Lutheran University. Prior to CI she worked in IT, training, program, and student support services positions at CSU Northridge and California Lutheran University.

    Karla joined the Academic Advising office fall 2018 as a graduate intern and was then hired in February 2020. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Communication with an emphasis in Business and Non-profit from California State University, Channel Islands in 2015. She is currently finishing her Master’s degree in Counseling and College Student Personnel at California Lutheran University and will graduate in May 2020. Prior to Academic Advising, she worked in the Admissions and Recruitment office at CSUCI as an evaluator. Karla is passionate about working with college students and helping them achieve their academic goals.

    Academic Advisor

    Andrea joined the Advising Center in February 2020. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Master’s degree in Counseling Education College Student Personnel, both from California Lutheran University. Prior to CI, she worked in Institutional Research, Admissions doing STEM Outreach, and Academic Advising. She was the first in her family to attend a four-year university. Andrea is passionate about working with college students and supporting them with anything they need to succeed.

    Aracely completed her Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance both from California Lutheran University. She has been at CI since 2013 and has over 10 years of experience working with college students. Prior to Academic Advising, she served as the Graduate Studies Center Counselor, STEM Academic Success Coach, and STEM Outreach Coordinator. As an Academic Advisor, she aims to assist and encourage all students to pursue their goals. She looks forward to meeting with you!

    Academic Advisor

    Czarina received her Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Spanish from California Lutheran University (CLU). She is currently finishing her Masters of Science in Counseling and College Student Personnel at CLU and will graduate in May 2020. Prior to working in Academic Advising at CI, Czarina worked at CLU in various roles. She has worked in Academic Advising, Registrar, Student Support Services, Disability Support Services, Articulation, Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals (adult degree program), and Residence Life. She is passionate about working with students to achieve their academic goals, and looks forward to being a part of the CI community.

    Aurora joined CI in March 2017. Previously she worked at Cal State LA for 10 years. She earned a Bachelor's in English at UC Berkeley after transferring form East Los Angeles College.
