Helium balloons and umbrellas are not permitted in the seating area as they may disrupt the view of guests seated around them.

The Cove Bookstore

The Cove Bookstore will have a tent located in the South Quad for the purchase of CI memorabilia. The retail store located at 45 Rincon Dr. in the University Town Center will be closed.

Standard and customized announcements or invitations are available for purchase online through Jostens at www.shop.jostens.com. It is recommended that you order customized announcements or invitations at least six weeks prior to Commencement. Generic invitations will also be available at The Cove Bookstore. For more information, visit The Cove Bookstore or call 805-482-5456.

Cap and Gown

Purchase your cap, gown and tassel regalia from The Cove Bookstore during CI’s Grad Fest. Regalia will only be available for purchase (no rentals), so you may keep your cap and gown in addition to your 2016 tassel. Additionally, this year’s gowns are eco-friendly made from post-consumer recycled material. Gowns may be recycled at the conclusion of Commencement at tables located near the South Quad entrances.

Total cost for undergraduates and credential students to purchase a cap, tassel and gown is $45 plus tax. For graduate students, the cost for master’s regalia (cap, gown, tassel, and hood) is $81 plus tax. You may also purchase your cap, gown and other accessories at The Cove Bookstore after CI’s Grad Fest; however, sizes are not guaranteed. Place your order as soon as possible to avoid high shipping costs and to ensure delivery before your ceremony. Best to order before the beginning of April.

Remember, you must be robed in a cap and gown to participate in the ceremony. Candidates not wearing the preferred attire will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.

Pop-Up Tents

Portable pop-up tents are not allowed in the South Quad. Several umbrellas and trees provide shade for guests who need to be protected from the sun.

Sequence of Events

The formal procession will begin promptly at the start of each ceremony. Staff will instruct degree candidates to line up by degree and major. The University’s Chief Marshal will lead the procession followed by other University Marshals, the degree candidates, faculty, and then the platform party. Once everyone is seated, the ceremony will begin. After invited speakers have concluded, University Marshals will lead their degree candidates to the stage where each graduating student will have their name announced. As graduating students cross the stage they will receive a tube that they will exchange for a diploma cover at the conclusion of the ceremony. Each ceremony is expected to last approximately 2 hours.

Photography & Video

Family members will not be allowed on or in front of the stage to take photographs or video, and may only take photographs or video in the designated photo/video areas and from audience seats. For public safety reasons, guests will not be allowed to take pictures or videos from the main aisle ways and will be asked by University Police to clear the area. We ask that family members be courteous of others when taking photos/videos.

GradImages, a professional photography company, will be taking pictures of the ceremony and of each degree candidate. All professional proofs will be mailed within one week after the event to the address provided on the Reader Card (provided to degree candidates during check-in). You may order photographs online at www.gradimages.com or call 800-261-2576.

The University will be recording the morning and afternoon Commencement ceremonies and will show a live stream video for each ceremony at http://www.csuci.edu/live. Both ceremonies will also be available from CI's official YouTube channel at a future date. If you'd like to be notified when the video is available, subscribe to our YouTube channel.
