Information for Graduates

In order to accommodate all of our graduating students and their family and friends, CSUCI's 2019 Commencement will include two ceremonies on Saturday, May 23, 2020 in the Central Mall.

The morning ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and will only include the following academic programs for bachelor's, master's, doctoral degrees or teaching credentials:

The afternoon ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. and will only include the following academic programs for bachelor’s, master's, doctoral degrees and credentials:

Arrival Times

The processional check-in area for bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral graduates and teaching credentials will be located in the South Quad.

Morning Ceremony Timeline

  • 7:30 a.m. Graduates arrive via University Drive
  • 8 a.m. Graduates line-up in South Quad
  • 8:30 a.m. Guests need to be seated
  • 9 a.m. Morning Ceremony begins
  • 11 a.m. (approx) Morning Ceremony concludes

Afternoon Ceremony Timeline

  • 1:30 p.m. Graduates arrive via University Drive
  • 2 p.m. Graduates line-up in South Quad
  • 2:30 p.m. Guests need to be seated
  • 3 p.m. Afternoon Ceremony begins
  • 5 p.m. (approx) Afternoon Ceremony concludes

Sequence of Events: The formal procession will begin promptly at the start of each ceremony. Staff will instruct graduates to line up by degree and major. The University’s Chief Marshal will lead the procession followed by faculty, other University Marshals, the graduates, and then the platform party. Once everyone is seated, the ceremony will begin. After invited speakers have concluded, University Marshals will lead their graduates to the stage where each graduating student will have their name announced and shake the President's hand, as they walk across the stage. Each ceremony is expected to last approximately two hours.

*Note: While you may be inclined to leave after your name has been called, please plan to stay for the duration of the ceremony as it would be impolite to leave while your fellow classmates are being honored.

Academic Attire

Graduates are required to wear a cap and gown in order to participate in commencement ceremonies. At the beginning of the ceremony, tassels are worn on the right. Upon direction from the stage at the conclusion of the ceremony, the tassel is moved to the left. Masters and Doctoral candidates will carry their hoods over their arm. The cap, gown and tassel can be purchased from The Cove Bookstore and at Grad Fest, Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5, 2020.

Personal Items

Please do not bring purses or other personal items. There is no place to check or store items


Commencement programs will be placed on each of the graduates' chairs in the Central Mall. Please take your program with you at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Announcements and Invitations

Standard and customized announcements or invitations are available at The Cove Bookstore. For more information, visit The Cove Bookstore or call 805-482-5456. It is recommended that you order customized announcements or invitations at least six weeks prior to Commencement.

Grad Images

Grad Images is a professional photography company, which will take portraits of graduates with their diploma, as well as photos of graduates walking across the stage and shaking hands with the President. Graduates will receive a proof of the photo(s) in the mail approximately one week following the ceremony. Photos may be purchased online at or by phone at 800.261.2576.

Grad Portraits

O'Connor Bros. Photography will be offering professional portrait opportunities at CSUCI's Grad Fest on March 4 & 5, 2020, as well as at their studio in Simi Valley, CA. For more information, visit or call 805.306.9542


Diplomas will be ordered following verification of degrees by Records & Registration. You will be notified by letter confirming that you have successfully completed all degree requirements. Diplomas will be sent to the mailing address on file in your myCI account. Expect delivery approximately four to eight weeks after your degree posts. Transcripts needed prior to the arrival of the diploma must be requested through the normal procedure. Please visit the Registrar’s Office website for the official request form.

Teaching Credentials

Official credential recommendation to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing will be completed by a Credential Analyst once the candidate has met all requirements and has completed a Credential Exit Check. For additional information, please contact the Credential Office at 805-437-8953.

Information for Guests:

CSUCI's Commencement will include two ceremonies on Saturday, May 23, 2020 in the Central Mall. The morning ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. and the afternoon ceremony will take place at 3 p.m.

Early arrival to campus is highly recommended, at least one hour prior to the start of the ceremony, in order to avoid heavy traffic and locate seating. Please reference the Parking Instructions page for further details.

Children Attending Ceremony

Due to safety issues, children of graduates are not permitted to sit in the graduate seating area. Graduates should make advance arrangements for their children to be seated with family and friends in the guest seating area.

Commencement Flowers

Flowers will be available for purchase from Commencement Flowers, at various locations in the Central Mall. Helium balloons and umbrellas are not permitted in the graduate or guest seating area ,as they may disrupt the view of guests seated around them.


Food and refreshments will be available for purchase from University Auxiliary Services for graduates and guests throughout both ceremonies.


Accessible restrooms will be open throughout the Bell Tower and Sierra Hall buildings. Portable restroom facilities will also be available in various locations around campus.


With the exception of service animals for people with disabilities, pets/animals are not allowed at the ceremony.

Pop-Up Tents

Portable pop-up tents are not allowed in the Central Mall. Several trees provide shade for guests who need to be protected from the sun.

Photography & Video

Guests are not allowed on or in front of the stage to take photographs or video, and may only take photographs or video in the designated photo/video areas and from audience seats. For public safety reasons, guests will not be allowed to take pictures or videos from the main aisles and will be asked by University Police and Security to clear the area. We ask that family members be courteous of others when taking photos/videos.

Grad Images, a professional photography company, will be taking pictures of the ceremony and of each degree candidate. All professional proofs will be mailed within one week after the event to the address provided on the Reader Card (provided to graduates during check-in). The University will be recording the morning and afternoon Commencement ceremonies and will show a live stream video for each ceremony at Both ceremonies will also be available from CSUCI's official YouTube channel at a future date. The Cove Bookstore

The Cove Bookstore will have a tent located in the Central Mall for the purchase of CSUCI memorabilia. The retail store located in the University Town Center will be closed.


The ceremony will be held outdoors in the Central Mall. Seating will be provided. Hats and/or sunglasses, sunscreen and bottled water are highly recommended for your guests. Ceremonies are held rain or shine.
