Intentional Focus on Student Success and Equity

In 2015, the California State University (CSU) launched Graduation Initiative 2025, its ambitious plan to increase graduation rates, eliminate equity gaps in degree completion and meet California’s workforce needs. To meet the workforce demands of California’s innovation economy in the years and decades to come, Graduation Initiative 2025 will add 100,000 more baccalaureate degree-educated citizens to California over the next 10 years. This would bring the total number of expected CSU graduates between 2015 and 2025 alone to more than one million.

CSU GI 2025 Goals

As of September 20, 2016, Graduation Initiative 2025 established a series of ambitious goals, including for the system.

  • Increasing the two-year graduation rate for transfer students to 45 percent.
  • Increasing the four-year graduation rate for transfer students to 85 percent.
  • Increasing the four-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen to 40 percent.
  • Increasing the six-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen to 70 percent.
  • Eliminating the achievement gap.

CSUCI GI 2025 Goals

CSU Channel Islands will advance CSU GI 2025 goals by:

  • Increasing the two-year graduation rate for transfer students to 54 percent.
  • Increasing the four-year graduation rate for transfer students to 78 percent.
  • Increasing the four-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen to 40 percent.
  • Increasing the six-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen to 67 percent.
  • Eliminating the achievement gap.

Although these are challenging goals, our students and their families are counting on us to succeed. And so is California, which needs more successful graduates to help power its innovation economy. However, merely decreasing the time to degree completion will not be enough to narrow California’s degree deficit. We must also shift our practices to serve the increasing number of students who have evolved beyond the traditional student profile, otherwise known as post-traditional students. This includes the growing Latinx population, as well as low-income students, first-generation college students, adult learners, full-time employees, commuter students, and working parents.i

Division of Academic Affairs Graduation Initiative Task Force

Ensuring that all students have the necessary skills and academic supports to complete a degree pathway at CSUCI is the role of the GI 2025 Taskforce within the Division of Academic Affairs. At CSUCI, we share the belief that every one of our students deserves the opportunity to channel their success. We recognize that education has the potential to lift individuals, families, and entire communities.
