Brief Activity Description
Sport remains dominated by men, so to correct this gender bias I will bring an innovative exhibit to CSU Channel Islands on Mexican American women who played softball during between 1930 and 1959. The exhibit titled " Mexican American Women and Softball 1930-1959: A League of their own and the struggle for Gender Equality" will highlight Mexican American women who crossed gender, class and ethnic barriers to softball. This exhibit is part of the Latino Baseball History Project housed at the Pfau Library at Cal State San Bernardino. The exhibit will be installed at the Broome Library Exhibition Space between Nov. 5th and Nov. 26th, 2014. Librarian Monica Pereira will assist in the installation of the exhibit at Broome Library and provide supervision during the exhibit's duration.

Former players will be honored during the exhibit opening on Nov. 5th at the Broome Library. There will also be a panel discussion and keynote speaker during the opening ceremony. Panel participants will include female softball from Ventura County and Vicki Ruiz, a Latina scholar who has written several books on Mexican American women including From Out of the Shadows: Mexican Women in 29th Century America and many others. During her keynote address she will discuss the role Latina athletes and their struggle for gender equality in the United States.
