May 14, 2021

Dear Dolphins:

We are excited about our plan to welcome students back next semester to primarily in-person instruction, co-curricular programming and student support services. With continuing positive progress on the COVID-19 pandemic in Ventura County and Governor Newsom’s decision to reopen our economy by June 15, it’s an exciting time at Channel Islands. Here are some critical updates for our Fall planning.

CSU Vaccination Policy
As was previously announced, to promote the safe return of all members of our campus community, the CSU will be mandating that all students and employees be vaccinated prior to returning in Fall 2021. A systemwide policy to address medical or religious exemptions is forthcoming. We anticipate that those who receive an approved vaccine exemption will be required to undergo routine testing to ensure the safety of our campus community.

For the Fall, we intend to utilize a phone app to verify that students have either been vaccinated or tested. This app will be deployed throughout the CSU system. Just a note that testing will be available on campus and at no cost to individuals who require testing.

To learn more about vaccination benefits visit the updated guidelines published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention; consult your own healthcare provider about options as they pertain to your health, and encourage others to do the same.

Course Schedule/Modality of Instruction
The Schedule of Classes lists the instructional modality, that is, whether a class is in-person, synchronous online, or asynchronous online. The majority of classes will be in-person. Broadly speaking, the University will be unable to accommodate individual student requests for alterations to the modality of instruction. However, the University is committed to finding alternatives for students with a documented disability accommodation. We also encourage you to contact your academic advisor to discuss your Fall schedule.

Common Spaces on Campus
Yes, the Library, Student Union, Residence Halls, and Dining Commons will be open. We are still awaiting updated guidelines from the California Department of Public Health and Cal/OSHA to finalize our plans—we look forward to seeing you there!

Communication Moving Forward
We will continue to provide monthly updates via email, at our Fall 2021 Semester planning webpage, and on our social media platforms. In addition, we will host another series of Town Hall sessions in July for students. If you have any questions not addressed here, please email so your questions may be directed to the appropriate area for a response.

In closing, thank you for your ongoing feedback and direct communication regarding our Fall 2021 planning and we look forward to welcoming you back to the campus. Enjoy your summer!

With sincere thanks,

Toni DeBoni, J.D.
Interim Vice President for Student Affairs
