Dear Faculty and Staff:

Efforts are currently underway to plan for in-person instruction, on-campus housing, student services, and other campus operations for the Fall 2021 semester. Planning efforts are being led by respective areas within each Division responsible for the provision of these programs and services. As planning continues, the campus approach will be as optimistic as possible striving to meet our maximum capacity – both in terms of space and students served – while prioritizing safety and ensuring compliance with Ventura County Public Health, as well as our own Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) requirements.

With regard to the plan for the repopulation of employees onto the campus, this planning will be based on the goal of a phased return of employees to on-campus work for the Fall 2021 semester, following applicable public health and CSU guidance and requirements.

At this point, our plans hinge upon how vaccinations will impact infection, hospitalization, and fatality rates in the coming months, and consequently, how behavioral mitigations like physical distancing will be defined. As such, we must acknowledge that a high degree of uncertainty will remain with regards to local, state, and national health guidelines and, therefore, campus planning will need to remain flexible and responsive to a variety of scenarios.

The campus is targeting April 26 to finalize all plans, which is the beginning of Fall semester registration for continuing students. Finalizing our plans this Spring semester will also provide time over the summer to implement the required space modifications for classrooms, workspaces, and campus activities, as well as ensure the continued health and safety of our campus.

Moving forward, monthly updates about our planning progress will be provided to the campus. These updates and all finalized campus plans will be made available on our Fall 2021 Semester Planning webpage so that students and their families can make plans.

If you have any questions, please email so your questions may be directed to the appropriate area for a response.

I am excited and hopeful at the prospect of welcoming—in person—our students, faculty and staff to the campus in the Fall.

Richard Yao, Ph.D.
Interim President
