Often, when people experience conflict, they feel they are pushed into a “box” or specific framework to address the situation. It can feel like the interests of the system come first. With the University Ombuds, conflict support always starts (and ends) with you, the visitor, in control. The Ombuds Office can protect visitor autonomy because the Ombuds has no formal role in grievance and complaint processes. The University Ombuds is never judge, jury, witness or prosecutor.

Many people who meet with the Ombuds want to understand the dimensions of conflict in their workplace better. They want to understand its sources and triggers. Others want help creating, developing and exploring options. Others seek help getting information they feel unsure or uncomfortable asking themselves. Or, they’re just not sure where to go to get help. Whatever the circumstances, the University Ombuds will strive to meet those needs without judgment or agenda.

With a clear understanding of the issues, you choose what steps you would like the University Ombuds to pursue, if any. For example, with your consent, the Ombuds may contact another party to explore a facilitated discussion. Or, the Ombuds might ask questions of various parties on campus seeking information or encouraging them to consider a perspective that may not have been explored before. Or again, the Ombuds might seek to clarify or improve a process that may not be operating fairly for everyone involved.
