California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) is launching it's next strategic
planning effort with the goal of completion in April 2025. This will be a challenging
endeavor, to be sure. Campus conversations at numerous levels around strategic planning
have been going on since mid-2021. The process has been one that allowed various opportunities
for consultation, input, and feedback.
It will be the responsibility of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee to recommend
a vision statement and finalized goals for our 2030+ plan. Once our vision and goals
are finalized: (1) workgroups for each goal will be created; (2) metrics for each
strategic goal will be identified and vetted through the Strategic Planning Committee
and the campus community; and (3) action plans will be created by the Strategic Planning
Committee and vetted through outreach to the campus community.
CI for 2030+ Timeline
Phase 1 – President’s “One Health” Vision and Select Committee
Completed | Summer-Fall 2023
In Summer 2023, President Yao led the development of a new vision for the future of Cal State Channel Islands, based on the global “One Health” movement. This CI for 2030+ vision is connected to a global movement called “One Health” which stands for the idea that the health and wellbeing of everyone and everything is interconnected: people (communities and individuals), the environment (plants, animals, and the planet), and economies. In Fall 2023, a President’s Select Committee with five subcommittees was convened to study, critique, and improve upon his One Health concept paper.
Phase 2 – Campus Engagement & Drafting Vision Statement
Completed | Spring-Summer 2024
In Spring 2024, the President’s Select Committee Report was shared with the campus community by email and through a series of virtual and in-person campus forums. Additionally, a One Health Vision Chat was created, using a generative, pre-trained transformer (GPT) which utilized materials created in Phases 1 and 2 to provide AI-generated answers to questions asked by campus members and external partners about the President’s One Health vision and its four organizing principles. In Summer 2024, President Yao charged a 2030+ Strategic Action Team to synthesize the One Health work of 2023-24 and create a draft vision statement for CI’s next strategic plan.
Phase 3 – Launching CI for 2030+ Strategic Planning Process
In Progress | Fall 2024
In Fall 2024, the CI for 2030+ Strategic Planning Process was launched with an invitation from President Yao to the campus community, external partners, and alumni to review and offer feedback on the draft vision statement created in Summer 2024. Additionally, this phase will involve opportunities for the campus community to review guiding principles to strategic planning, to reinforce the University mission statement, to finalize a new vision statement, and to explore and potentially expand the number of goals to be pursued via CI for 2030+.
Phase 4 – Creating CI for 2030+ Steering Committee and Strategic Goal Recommendations
In Progress | Fall 2024 - Spring 2025
The SPSC will lead the campus community in creating an action plan to realize CI for 2030+ goals identified in Phase 3.
Phase 5 – Create Strategic Goal Action Plans, Iterative Assessment, & Budget Development
Not Yet Started | Fall 2025 - Spring 2026
In Spring 2025, members of the campus community will be appointed to create an action/operating plan, mapping outcomes to strategic goals for 2030+. With a new strategic plan completed by April 2025, the campus launches the plan and its assessment, evaluation, and budget planning processes to ensure continuous improvement in realizing our goals for 2030+.
