I am a graduate student, am I eligible for HLI?

No, at this time we only accept undergraduate applications.

I don’t have a 3.0 GPA, am I automatically disqualified?

No, we review each application on an individual basis.

I missed the deadline, can I still apply?

We only accept applicants who submitted all of the required documents by the deadline.

I don’t know my schedule for next semester, can I still apply?

Yes, please provide the most information you know about your future schedule to assist the HLI team. It is not mandatory we know your schedule in advance.

Will the internship work around my class schedule?

Yes, the employer at your internship place will work with you to create a schedule that works for both the intern and employer.  Please keep in mind that the majority of employers will require most hours to be completed during regular business hours M-F 9am-5pm, with some flexibility for nights and weekends.

I have another job off campus, can I still do an HLI Internship?

Yes, however we highly recommend that students do not work over 20 hours a week to ensure adequate time for academics. It is critically important that students maintain academics during the HLI internship.

I have another job on-campus, can I still do an HLI Internship?

It depends on how many hours you are required to complete each week at your other on-campus position. HLI interns are classified CI student assistants and cannot work over 20 hours per week.  If your other on-campus position requires 8 or less hours per week and both positions combined do not exceed a total of 20 hours per week, you are still eligible.

Is there a way to guarantee that I am selected for HLI?

No, unfortunately all decisions made by the selection committee are reflective of the candidate pool each semester. Each semester the candidate pool is unique and constantly changing, therefore the final intern selection could also change.

I didn’t get selected for HLI, why? What can I do to improve?

A variety of reasons can affect your eligibility and or the selection process. You can visit Drop-In Career Counseling to discuss how to improve your application.

Can I get a status update on my HLI application?

After submitting a completed application, students will be notified if they are selected for the interview process via email. Please refer to the confirmation email for the notification timeline.

Can I know my placement in advance?

Site placements are confirmed after interns are selected. You will be notified of your site placement at orientation.

Can I participate in HLI more than once?

Funding is allocated to one HLI Internship placement per student.

Can I recommend or change my site placement?

All site partners have completed contracts for HLI intern placements.  Therefore, making a recommendation for a placement is not possible. However, an agreement can be terminated early as deemed necessary by the employer or the HLI team.
