Salsa and Wheelchair Salsa Dancing – Oct. 1
Ready for some salsa dancing lessons? On Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4 – 7p.m. at the Aliso Hall Plaza, Intercultural Services presents Marisa Hamamoto and her wheelchair dance company, Infinite Flow, performing and teaching salsa dance as well as speaking about her experience as a wheel-chair and able-bodied dancers. The dance education program will be from 4 – 5 p.m. and the free dance from 5 – 7 p.m.
Hamamoto created her dance company with the mission of sharing the power of dance and performance to individuals with physical challenges, promoting musicality, rehabilitation, and social interaction through performances and events. United Way Day of Caring – Oct. 3
The CI community will participate in United Way of Ventura County's annual Day of Caring to take place on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This annual event will bring together CI students, staff and faculty to serve at Prototypes Women's Center, a 6- to 12-month residential treatment program for women in recovery and their children. Join us as we work alongside the residents, helping makeover their grounds and other projects. All volunteers will receive a Serve it Up and Day of Caring T-shirt for their participation.
Participants will meet at the Sage Hall parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and ride a bus together to the service site. The bus will return to campus by 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at the service site.

Dodger Day – Oct. 4
CI is taking over Dodger Stadium! Join over 1,000 CI students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community friends at the 12th Annual Dodger Day on Sunday, Oct. 4. Cheer on Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean as he throws out the first pitch and root for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they take on the San Diego Padres.

Major Fair – Oct. 6
The annual Major Fair will take place Oct. 6, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Broome Library Plaza. This event is designed to assist students with exploring their major/minor options and other services offered by Academic Affairs such as Academic Advising, the Learning Resource Center and the University Writing Center.
In addition, students can learn more about studying abroad, service learning opportunities, academic clubs active on campus and services offered through the Graduate Studies Center and Career Development Services. Light refreshments will served.

Meet the Men of McFarland USA – Oct. 15
On Thursday, Oct. 15, Intercultural Services is hosting the Meet the Men in McFarland USA luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Grand Salon.
The Disney film, McFarland USA is based on the real life events about McFarland High School's inaugural cross country team. The seven men whose lives were featured in the film - Thomas Valles, Johnny Sameniego, David Diaz, Danny Diaz, Damacio Diaz and their Coach Mr. White - will be in attendance to discuss their experiences (overcoming financial, cultural and personal obstacles), how their story was portrayed in the film and how diversity is represented in the media.

Free FAFSA Workshop for those who assist parents and students – Oct. 17
Do you assist parents and students with completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid Applications (FAFSA)? Then join us for a free workshop on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Aliso Hall, Room 150. This workshop is administered by the California Student Aid Commission and will cover how to complete an accurate application, the DREAM ACT, How to Leverage Resources, What You Need to Know, and Why Follow-Up is Critical After Completing the FAFSA. k(NO)w Justice, k(NO)w Peace: Getting Involved with Tunnel of Oppression – Oct. 28 -29
Tunnel of Oppression is a two-day interactive experience hosted by Housing & Residential Education on Oct. 28 - 29 in Petit Salon.
The Tunnel of Oppression is a campus diversity initiative originally developed at Western Illinois University in 1994, inspired by The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. The creators of the Tunnel of Oppression sought to provide participants with an emotionally charged experience that would allow them to briefly experience what oppressed groups have endured/continue to endure in their lives. Through the use of photographs, facts, displays, vignettes, videos, and recordings concepts and forms of oppression are communicated to and interpreted by participants.
After “going through” the Tunnel participants (usually a small group – no more than 15 people) are able to debrief their experience with the facilitators who lead them through the Tunnel. Traditionally to close the debrief participants are asked to consider what actions they will take in their own lives to aid in deconstructing oppression.
