Students in Service, AmeriCorps

Become an AmeriCorps member, serve your community, and receive funding to help pay for your education!

Program Purpose:

Students in Service, AmeriCorps is a program of Washington Campus Compact (WACC) with funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Students in Service supports students who provide valuable service in their communities. By participating in the program, the member becomes a part of the AmeriCorps national service network that improves lives and strengthens communities throughout the country.

Students serve at schools and non-profit community-based organizations in the areas of education, human needs/services, the environment, public safety, and community development.

Upon successful completion of a term of service, members are eligible to receive an Education Award to be applied toward tuition costs or outstanding federal student loans.The Education Award is not cash; it comes in the form of an electronic voucher that is sent directly to the campus or loan holder.

The Education Award amount varies, depending on the term of service you choose:
(amounts valid for enrollments beginning after August 2011)

  • 300 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,175
  • 450 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,468

Student Eligibility

This program wil be available to students beginning, August 29, 2011.

Students must be:

  • currently enrolled, full or part-time at CSU Channel Islands
  • a citizen, national, or permanent legal resident of the USA
  • at least 17 years old
  • either a graduate or undergraduate student
  • have a cumulative and semester GPA of at least 2.0/li>
  • in good academic and behavioral standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation)/li>
  • free of any holds on University records/li>

NOTE: Due to the limited number of enrollment slots awarded to CSU Channel Islands, former SIS, AmeriCorps members who did not fulfill the term of service, or were otherwise exited from the program without an award, are ineligible to enroll in the 2011-2012 program year.

Getting Started

CSU Channel Islands is awarded a limited number of enrollments each year for the Students in Service, AmeriCorps program. Enrollments are offered on a first come basis to students who are able to complete steps 1-3 below and who can demonstrate their ability to fulfill the required service hours within one year.

STEP 1: Complete Online Preservice Overview

Complete the Online Preservice Overview for general program and eligibility information. Print out your completed and signed preservice overview questionnaire; you will need to include this document with your enrollment package and bring to the AmeriCorps Program Orientation. See Step 2.

STEP 2: Attend Program Orientation

Please register for the AmeriCorps Program Orientation here

Bring to the orientation a copy of your Online Preservice Overview questionnaire, a copy of a birth certificate or US passport and a printed copy of the the "2011-2012 Enrollment Package" (PDF) AND the 2011-2012 Member Agreement (PDF). The orientation will go over program guidelines and you will complete the Enrollment Package and choose a placement site. See Step 3.

STEP 3: Packet Submission

Once your packet is completed, signed, and approved you may begin your term of service.
