I'd like to share with you some information about checking your work and the manual accessibility evaluation that we've been performing during this workshop. You should note that nearly ninety percent of web accessibility evaluation requirements need either a visual or a human check. Which means that automated tools for checking accessibility really only provide a very small picture of whether a webpage is really accessible or not. However, these tools can be useful for quick checks of webpages to find common issues which can be checked automatically. And, are useful as serving as a baseline for very basic accessibility checks. To perform an automated accessibility check on any live webpage, simply browse to the page that you'd like to check, for example I'll check the academic programs webpage at CI. And then using the web developer toolbar, click the tools button, and choose validate section 508. Once the processing is completed, the webpage will display a report which tells you whether or not the page passed an automated verification. And below on the webpage a detailed checklist will be provided outlining each of the sixteen section 508 standards for webpage accessibility, and whether or not the page passed the checkpoint, didn't pass, or could not be checked for a given issue. Note that some issues, in the case of section 508 checkpoint B, are listed as not applicable, because no multimedia elements, such as audio or video, were discovered in this page. Further elements, such as checkpoint C and D have no response, because those checkpoints cannot be checked by an automated testing tool. Again, automated testing tools really have limited usefulness and cannot replace a human and or visual check at this time. There are some other automated tools that are available for you; the HiSoftware Cynthia Says Tools which is what is used by the web developer toolbar, as well as the Watch Fire WebXACT tool are useful for checking single webpages. The University does have a license for server based and desktop software that enables checking of multiple webpages. To obtain this software or access to the reports please contact the IT Help Desk at helpdesk@csuci.edu.
