WHAT:  The Sixth Annual Conference on Poverty presented by Rotary District 5240 will be held on the CSUCI campus on Nov. 16 and 17. The conference will address the following issues: the definition of poverty; the effect of the environment on poverty; the effect of poverty on the environment; resource degradation impacts on the poor; technologies available to help the poor while keeping the environment safe; the effect of urbanization on the poor. The event on Nov. 16 will be a reception for guests to meet those who will be speaking at the conference, and the event will also showcase projects from Mexico, Romania, and Vietnam. Events on Nov. 17 include presentations from the following speakers:

• William Ascher, the Donald C. McKenna Professor of Government and Economics, at Claremont McKenna College, presenting on the connection between poverty and the environment
• Elsa Chang, Director of the Central America Program at the Center for International Policy in Washington, D. C., presenting on the concepts of: Policy agenda through social movements and NGO participation; Environmental entitlements for the poor; Protecting the rights of the poor and the environment environmental justice

CSUCI’s Rotaract students also will give a presentation along with Christine Popok, English Lecturer at CSUCI.
