Camarillo, Calif., Sept. 30, 2014 – The Art program at CSU Channel Islands (CI) is pleased to present artist and designer Ben Blanchard in “Shores and Summits: An Exploration of the Road Less Traveled” at the Grad Wall Gallery in Napa Hall. This one-person student exhibition consisting of digital designs and screen prints will be on display Thursday, Oct. 9, through Friday, Oct. 31. The public is invited to a free reception with the artist on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In “Shores and Summits,” Blanchard investigates the road less traveled. Focusing on Ventura County’s coastal and mountain subcultures, this new work explores the relationship between individuals and their gear. Reaching out to locals, including body surfers, kite flyers, trail runners and even a pie baker, Blanchard highlights trailblazing individuals by selecting and studying their most prized possessions. Whether it’s a backpack, a pair of shoes, or a climbing harness, this is the gear that gets people there — wherever “there” might be. With a style that incorporates heavy textures and an assortment of bright colors, Blanchard captures the spirit of the journey in his uniquely illustrated portraits.

Blanchard is an artist, designer, screen printer, surfer, and senior at CI. This will be his first-ever solo art exhibition.

The Grad Wall Gallery is CI’s newest exhibition space, intended to show off the work of some of the Art Program’s finest graduating seniors. The Grad Wall is located in Napa Hall, Room 1154, on Ventura Street on the CI campus. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, contact the CI Art Program at 805-437-2772, email art@csuci.edu, or visit the Art Program.
