Camarillo, Calif., Nov. 7, 2016 — Swap your energy-wasting, expensive incandescent holiday lights for efficient LED holiday lights on Saturday, Nov. 12 during a Camarillo electronic waste collection event.

CSU Channel Islands (CI)’s Green Generation club will team up with the Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance (VCREA) and PC Recycle to host the electronic waste collection and holiday light exchange from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mission Oaks Park, 5879 Mission Oaks Blvd.

It will be most convenient for residents of Camarillo, but all Ventura County residents are encouraged to participate.

Participants will receive two packages of LED light strands, white or colored, while supplies last.

LED lighting is more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting than incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting. LED lights are also cheaper and safer, according to CI’s Green Generation president Jeyla Fendi, 22, an Environmental Science & Resource Management (ESRM) senior.

“They use up a lot more energy and voltage than LEDs and some of them are hazardous because they’re so flammable,” she said.

Faculty adviser to Green Generation, ESRM Lecturer Linda O’Hirok, Ph.D., says every step toward a greener earth matters.

“We are only one of many species that our environment supports and using LEDs is a quick, easy and small step we can take to protect that environment,” O’Hirok said.  “Every such step we take to improve our environment ensures a better future.”

Participants can bring any outdated electronics for safe recycling as well. For more information regarding the LED light exchange, please call the Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance at 805-654-3874, or for e-waste related questions, call PC Recycle at 805-499-0050.
