“How the Mind Works: Cases and Concepts in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy” discusses many topics, including psychotherapeutic principles and identity, psychoanalytic concepts, making case formulations and interpretations, psychosocial development, individual and large-group identity, trauma and transgenerational transmission, dreams and unconscious fantasies, therapeutic play, personality organization, cultural considerations, and psychoanalysis in organizations and groups.

Phoenix Publishing House published the book, which is co-written by Vamik Volkan, in June. It is available from the publisher and Amazon.

Kevin Volkan is a founding faculty member of CSUCI. He researches and teaches courses on psychopathology and atypical behaviors, personality theater, Eastern philosophy and Nazi Germany. He also serves on the graduate medical education faculty of Community Memorial Health System, where he teaches and conducts research with residents. He holds doctorates in clinical and quantitative psychology and is a graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health and a former Harvard Medical School faculty member and administrator. Volkan is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of more than 50 psychoanalytic and psycho-political books, including “Enemies on the Couch: A Psychopolitical Journey through War and Peace.”
