Overview: Toyo Winter Program
Toyo University is a private university located in Tokyo, Japan. Its main campus, the Hakusan Campus, is situated in central Tokyo within walking distance of several subway stations.
The Toyo Winter Program is a non-credit two-week Japanese language and cultural immersion program offered exclusively to students from Toyo University’s partner institutions and participating university consortia. The program combines beginner-level Japanese instruction with cultural classes, hands-on activities, field trips, and opportunities to engage with Toyo University students. Program Details
The Toyo Winter Program 2027 is a non-credit experience designed for students with little or no previous Japanese-language experience. English is the primary language used throughout the program, while the Japanese-language classes are intended for complete beginners. Online orientation session will be held in mid December.
Program activities include:
- Japanese language and culture classes
- Interactive classes and activities with Toyo University students
- A welcome party, campus tour, and farewell party
- A disaster-prevention center experience
- Visits to Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa, and the Yanesen district
- A field trip to Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture
- Seasonal and cultural activities, such as strawberry picking, udon making, farm work, and traditional decoration making

Deadline to Apply
October 27, 2026 - Applications may close before the deadline if the program reaches capacity. Students are encouraged to apply early. Applications are competitive.
Eligibility
- Current CSUCI student in "Good Academic Standing" at the time of application and while abroad.
- Passport valid at least 6 months after end date of program
- No previous Japanese-language study is required
Application: Two-Step Process
- Complete the CSUCI Short-Term Study Abroad: Direct-Enroll Application.
- After completing the CSUCI application, students will receive instructions for submitting Toyo University’s online application.
Cost
The program fee is ¥286,000, approximately $1,835 USD. The dollar amount may change based on the current exchange rate. Students can check the latest currency conversion through Wise.
The program fee includes:
- Program tuition
- Program activities and field trips
- Local transportation required for scheduled program activities
- Hotel accommodations
- Daily breakfast
The fee does not include:
- Roundtrip airfare to and from Tokyo
- Transportation between the airport and hotel
- Lunch and dinner
- Local transportation outside scheduled program activities
- Mandatory international travel and health insurance (approx. $80)
- Personal expenses
Housing
Participants will stay at the Toyoko Inn Tokyo Keihin-Tohoku Line Oji Station North Exit.
The hotel is located in a convenient area near public transportation and is approximately 25 minutes from Toyo University’s Hakusan Campus by train. Breakfast is included in the program fee.
Location
Toyo University’s Hakusan Campus is located in Bunkyo City in central Tokyo, approximately a five-minute walk from Hakusan and Hon-Komagome subway stations.
Tokyo offers students an exceptional setting in which to study Japanese language and culture. The city brings together historic temples, shrines, and traditional neighborhoods with internationally recognized centers of technology, fashion, art, and entertainment. Tokyo’s extensive public transportation system also makes it easy for students to explore the city’s many distinctive neighborhoods.
Participants will experience Tokyo through classroom instruction, cultural activities, and organized visits to destinations such as Asakusa, Tokyo Skytree, and Yanesen. Learn more about Toyo University’s campuses and locations.
