Graduate Writing Studio Philosophy:
The Graduate Writing Studio (GWS) exists to provide writing support to credential and graduate students in order to meet the increasingly complex requirements of advanced degree writing. Faculty instructors are available to meet and collaborate with students in order to help them plan, organize, and carry out their required writing tasks – whether they be small writing assignments for postbaccalaureate or graduate coursework, or larger, often semester-long culminating projects such as a Masters project, thesis or professional portfolio. We strive to empower students with a clearer understanding of academic writing processes and a continually developing writing proficiency in various academic genres.
Policies:
We are here to relieve credential and graduate students’ writing-related anxiety, and to overcome obstacles in the writing process. We will help you to bolster the strengths of and combat the weaknesses in your writing. We are here to help you succeed in your post baccalaureate program!
Meet our Graduate Writing Studio Instructors:
Monica Pereira
Graduate Writing Studio Instructor
Monica Pereira joined the John Spoor Broome Library at California State University Channel Islands in July 2012. She has worked as a writing instructor in freshman composition, and a Writing Center coach (Marquette University). Other relevant experience includes teaching English to speakers of other languages.
Monica's research interests range from citizen science, and transformative justice, to educational equity, and transliteracy. This breadth of interest is a direct result of having worked with researchers at various academic libraries, including a medical library, and large research institutions. She has over 20 years experience in academic librarianship. At CI, Monica teaches writing-intensive UNIV classes.
Monica joined the Graduate Writing Studio in spring 2015 and can't wait to meet with you to review your work.
Nancy Jean Pément
Graduate Writing Studio Instructor
In another life, Dr. Nancy-Jean Pément was a criminologist with the Ministry of the Solicitor General and at the Department of Justice Canada. She also taught in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa—the world’s largest bilingual French-English university. In California, she worked at CSUN on its reaccreditation and for the Vice-Provost, and has taught in the Criminal Justice Department at Ventura College. A newcomer to CI, she advises students in the Masters in Education program on their theses.
Her research interests include critical feminism, postmodernism, women’s experiences in higher education, doctoral study, the sociology of law, victimization and peacemaking. Nancy also enjoys poetry and has been published in several literary magazines. She is fluent in French and enjoys reading and speaking Spanish with a dictionary by her side.
Mari Estrada
Graduate Writing Studio Instructor
Mari Estrada holds a Master’s Degree and Doctorate in Education with an Emphasis in Leadership, Policy, and Organizational Theory from the University of California, Santa Barbara where she also completed an undergraduate degree in Sociology. Mari’s research interests span from early childhood education to higher education including instructional methods, professional development for teachers, student support services, and education policy. Her graduate research focused on work team design and function; individual disposition and discretion; and large-scale school reform policy. She joined CI as Adjunct Faculty for the School of Education in 2014 and serves as the Community College Coordinator for the TEACH project. She considers herself a techy and enjoys working with students to plan and execute their writing and research projects. Appointments with Mari are available in-person or virtual meetings using Zoom.
