CSUCI’s user experience (UX) team can help you understand your target audience and their goals. We work with you to design an engaging, vibrant and consistent user experience. One which is mobile-friendly, accessible, and reflects your digital brand. Here is how…

  • All of our clients have different needs and goals for their visitors. In our first meeting together we’ll work with you to determine what those are and which approach is right. We’ll do so by gathering key information, like the target audience for your web site, primary tasks, information about your competitors and more. If you already have a website, this process is great at exposing existing friction points.

We work with you to outline an appropriate information architecture, navigation and content strategy to meet these goals. We can even integrate a specific branding strategy from your organization. All of these activities help improve and optimize how visitors use and experience your website.

  • Good data and testing are essential to meet your users’ needs. We use Google Analytics to gather data and to help understand the value and patterns of your website visitors. Google Analytics provides data about visited pages, user demographics, popular devices and browsers used. Such findings helps us make targeted improvements, set goals and confirm their effectiveness. We can even gather analytic data if you already have a website to gain more insight on how it is performing.

We also test our websites for quality, consistency and usability. Designs get tested on a variety of web browsers like Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox and others. We test on different devices like smart phones, tablets and laptops.

We also test how visitors use our websites to gain insights into common tasks. Sometimes tests are online and other times in person. These kinds of tests help us understand how designs perform with real people in any context. Furthermore, accessibility is a key design principle at CSUCI, and we strive to build our websites to be accessible from the ground up. Learn more about accessibility at CSUCI.

  • As the goals and strategy take shape, we move to the design and development of your website. Our design process tends to be two-fold: visual and functional (and often overlaps).

Developing the visuals usually begins with simple sketches and wireframes. These evolve to more detailed mockups, created using tools like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe XD. There are many other tools and methods available. Some help us present and approve the design look and feel. These include mood boards, style tiles, style prototypes, and element collages.

With your approval of the visuals, we then create a functional prototype using code. The prototype helps confirm and/or correct design choices before building the final design. This allows for a dynamic, swift, and iterative approach.

  • Creating guides and documentation is a necessary and ongoing effort in user experience. They ensure product quality and consistency. Within our team, they also enhance productivity, enforce code best practices and maintenance.

Our web style guide informs the public on general visual standards followed at CSUCI. These include color, branding, and typography to name a few topics. Our team also uses a library of re-usable code patterns based on our design framework to describe how to use the code patterns in web designs. We also use GitHub to manage and maintain our codebase, track version history, issues and more.

We hope you’ll notice the outcome of our effort when you visit any of CSUCI’s websites.
