Swallow Nesting Activity on Campus

Each spring, swallows return to Cal State Channel Islands to build nests and raise their young. These migratory birds are a familiar and valued part of our campus environment and play an important role in the local ecosystem.

• Why are swallows nesting on campus buildings?

  Swallows commonly nest on human-made structures because they provide stable surfaces and protection from predators. This is a natural and recurring seasonal behavior.

• Are swallows protected by law?

  Yes. Swallows are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which prohibits the disturbance or removal of active nests, including those with eggs or dependent young.

• Is nest removal a regular practice on campus?

  No. The University does not have a practice of removing active nests. Any work near nesting areas must follow strict guidelines to ensure compliance with wildlife protections.

• Will the University allow swallows to nest on campus going forward?

  Yes, where feasible and safe to do so. Swallows are a natural part of our campus ecosystem. During nesting season, active nests are protected and should not be disturbed.
