April 26, 2024 - While graduating students might be tempted to create social media-worthy photos using colorful confetti and/or glitter, we encourage you to rethink the products you're using to get those images.
Confetti is litter.
The cute confetti cannons that make for great photo ops do more damage than good, leaving litter on campus for weeks, diminishing the university’s beauty, and adding undue burden on custodial and landscaping staff at the University. This debris is nearly impossible to cleanup and has negative impacts on the local environment such as being confused for food by wildlife, running into waterways, breaking down into microplastics, and contributing to ocean pollution.
We know that this is a momentous occasion, and we want you to celebrate! We encourage you to explore options for purchasing sustainable alternatives such as:
- Bubbles
- Flower petals
- Photo Filters
- Dried flowers or herbs
- Hole-punched leaves
Consider these alternatives as you capture this meaningful occasion while ensuring our campus remains pristine and beautiful for all. Congratulations to all the 2024 graduates and thank you for doing your part to be good stewards of the environment.
