POEC was created in Fall 2023 to examine and address the root causes of operational challenges. Staff, faculty, and administrators from across campus submitted proposals about a real-life issue or process at CSUCI that they wanted to study, learn from, resolve, and/or improve upon. The selected teams began their work by first learning how to apply multiple lenses for analyzing challenges (and successes). They then made recommendations from their organizational analysis for improvement (or how to grow successes in other areas). The Collaborative required new learning as well as the creation of a concrete action plan with recommendations for the President and Cabinet.

The President’s Collaborative is grounded on the belief that each unit’s employees are experts in their work. The POEC purpose, therefore, is to build upon the deep knowledge about that work by sharing a few organizational lenses and tools to problem solve around the team’s chosen focus issue(s). Examining an issue neutrally and systematically from multiple angles and then addressing the multi-prong findings increase not just effectiveness and efficiency but helps impact the political and/or cultural influences and teamwork dynamics that affect the unit’s work. The Collaborative is forward-looking, and solution focused; it is about gaining a deeper understanding of our issues, caring about our University, our students, and each other, and mitigating some persistent challenges experienced at CSUCI in various ways.
